View Full Version : The Sun
phone33 02-21-2005, 05:54 PM Ok so I am trying to make a 3D model of the sun, i have made all the other planets by just finding a texture for them and wraping that around a sphere however, the sun has all sorts of solar flares and the carona and that sort and i cant find a nice texture to use and just wrap it around a shpere. and help will be awsome

Take a look at the procedural textures. You find them by clicking the 'T' in any one of the surface channels. At the top of the next window next to 'Layer Type' change 'Image Map' to 'Procedural Textures'. Further down you will see 'Procedural Type' select that and you will see a long list of prefinded textures. These are mathmatical expressions that create repeatable patterns. There is more here than I can possably(sp) cover (read the manual). These will give you the qualities of a boiling/hot/dyanmic sun surface. Have fun

use a gradient and the turbulence procedural.
proton has a tutorial on gradients that will show you how.
not sure where it is right off the bat.

Rent the movie "Frequency." It has special features that show how they made a sun as well as another documentary about the sun, and sigmoids.
Spiderman 2 had a very cool looking sun in it too.

Try going to LWG3D, they have about 2 or 3 in the mesh downloads section, mostly animated procedurals and particles. Download them and have a look at how they were done, Hope this Helps

Heres a sun I did way back in LW5.6 days. It was done only with geometry and procedurals. I did it that way because it took a lot less time to render then using HVs and I had a lot better control over what was happening. :)

thx for the help guys
You could probably get some nice geometric detail going with that AVT displacement plugin aswell..
