View Full Version : Faking volumetric shadows
Julez4001 02-21-2005, 02:52 AM The old cone trick is great for faking volumetric light but has anyone every came up with a cheat for shadows where the object is being animated thru it (say a character, not a ball) and the results were great?

Compositing? Mapped Spotlights? Using a program that supprts CG-Shaders to do such things in realtime? Choose which ever seems most practical to you *giggle*.

Try using the spinning light trick but with volumetrics turned on a set to sprite mode. If you use any textures on it set them to world coords. :)

Larry,
Any inside ideas on how Zoic did the "volumetric" looking lights coming out the back of Serenity, (on Firefly), just before it makes a lightspeed jump? Got a Serenity model, and thus far haven't been able to get that particular look.

Sorry for not posting a shot but I don't have a place to host 'em and they are always really small. I'll try .

Hi Ed. From those screen shots, it looks as if it could be transparency mapped polys. I haven't seen the animation though. But even if the camera flys into the "volume" that can be faked in post to resemble volume (with more control and a lot less time in rendering).

Also, they might be volumetrics with a texture applied to them.
