Hiyooo!
Here comes the ShaolinKid!
I started doin this during chomage and i wanted to make a video game demo that would look like a beatem up game but i had no programmers so i just made this..
Sorry for lighting textures and environnement.. I dont like to do them :P
Music is from Shaolin soccer, sounds are from dragonball and Naruto series.

Very good, I like how you recreated the video game movement and timing. I work in the game industry and It's actually a very good and inexpensive way to demonstrate to the programmers and designers what the final product should look and feel like.
Your poses are good too, I like his final stance.
Tres bon pour les effets speciaux aussi !

Cool cause thats what i wanted to do, showing a gameplay without programmation :D
Before that movie, I worked on Yuyu Hakusho dark tournament for PS2, developped at Digital Fiction. That was soo cool cause i really like combat games :D
The game was Kinda Crappy but i was able to push some o my ideas :)
While developping Yuyu, we had some probs cause we didnt have money to make a preproduction. so i imagined it would be better to start making a game knowing how it should look like :D

heyoo!!
Thx for your comment :) I see alot of things that i could improve in it but i must get new animation skills to do them cause thats the level i am now..
I have a new job that consist more of making acting so ill improve alot if i go through that project.
Maybe after ill try to do something more complete in some months with good level design and lightning and maybe itll be playable, if i have help of some programmers! :D

Brilliant! love the character and animation, he reminds me a little bit of BCkid, just the big head tho i guess,
inspired me to dust off street fighter alpha 3 again, so thanks a lot!

Holy sh*t! You brought back the fighting game memories, man!! It was excellent!!:) Very NICE!!
The sound effects were great too. Combo looks like they came out the Capcom VS Marvel series while the background reminds me of Karateka :P
Your work is way too cool!!

WOW
thats really great
ýou convinced me right now that i should beginn with animations, too
but could you say how long that took time to render and how you did those energie explosions and kamehamehas ?

Pinet,
Wonderful piece you have put together! The animation is very stylised and timing I found was spot on throughout the entire piece. I can definitely see the Dragonball, Matrix and those classic 2.5D fighters influence :) Keep up the good work, sounds to me like you have the drive and determination to get better at this, you'll go far!

WOW.... And I don't mean that like "world of warcraft" , but the old expression "WOW!!"
This must be the best short clip I have EVER seen.... I just don't know what to say.

02-23-2005, 07:39 PM
hehehe im pretty enjoyed you all like it :)
For the glowin kamehameha, i just composited a deforming cylinder with a glow on it over the main movie with after effect, that was pretty simple :P for the ends explosion, the rays of light are made by putting a volume light in the middle of the bunch of ninjas, then the explosion is a scaling sphere with Vpost glow on it.
For the render, it was like maybe 20 hours, not super long since its a basic lightening and the models arent very defined.
I got a friend that'll try to program some stuff on it :D

That's a super cool short man!
I love the fast passed action and I really like the FXs, all of em!
Good animation and videogame feeling.
The only part I don't like as much the the end, were he comes by the and does his cool guy attitude and sits. Thought I like his menacing pose at the very end. In my opinion, after the title comes in, he could have just arrive jumping from the top of the screen and do that final pose...
But anyways, I really digged it and hope to see more animations from you soon!
Really good job!

Really nice work, Pinet! I'm glad you chose to mix up the attacks. It really got me excited about watching the character and wishing it *was* a game. I second the ending suggestion, though. The cool guy portion just seemed a little out of character. The kid didn't flaunt or taunt during the fights. So, when the kid does the "cool kid" thing at the end, that over confidence (or arrogance) seems a little out of place from the previous shots.
All in all, excellent character animation and timing. Nice Job!
Pinet
02-24-2005, 07:55 PM
hehehe sorry for the last part, i just wanted to show some acting since i was lookin for a job :P
I worked in video game for a year so i needed that part to show i can do acting too.
I really accept your crits but i think its not because the character is serious in the first part that he cant cool off in the end!
I dunno if its what youve understanded of it, but hes just exhausted from the first part and after he sit down, some dude tell's him its not finished!
At first he thinks its a joke but when tthe "not existing" guy tells him the camera is still on, He kinda panic and return to his serious state!
I didnt think theres arrogance with that but maybe its no enought visually explicit so everybody sees it the same way i did :P
Anyways, thx again for comments and advice !

I can see that. 'Arrogance' was probably the wrong word to use here. When I first viewed it, I got the impression that he was giving a "shout out" to his buddy off stage and then realizing the camera is still rolling. Having another look at it, I can see that this just came from the speed in which he does the "point" gesture.
If your interested in playing with the shot, Maybe he could take a deep breath right when he sits to slow things down a bit. Then, he slowly looks to the side (or do that side of head flash thing to get his attention @ 0:24)...and so on.
Still, an excellent animation. Great job!
Pinet
02-24-2005, 08:48 PM
i agree with you, the deep breath would have been better, more clear
First i wanted to include one of the black ninja to tell him camera is rolling but i tryed it without, and i personnally thinked it could lead to confusion like you said.
My next job will consist of acting and i hope ill get people who can help me finding better ways to express the mind of the characters i animate with a more "evident" body language :)
That will be a great challenge for me, its for the second Tripping the rift season :D
I have kinda a problem here, since many people saw ShaolinKid's adventures movie, ill need to upgrade my webhost service so i can transfer it to more people ($$$$)
Ill pay but if someone is rich and wants to help, :D your kinda welcome ;)
Maybe ill try bittorrent but if theres a way to put it on some mirror site, that would be great!
I know that theres some "unlimited data transfer per month" webhosts, if you find any solution for me that would be cool :D

02-24-2005, 09:02 PM
I don't think you really have anything to worry about. Your poses, weight, etc. are all great. If there's ever doubt, act it out. :) Grab that mirror or camcorder and do the sequence yourself a couple times. (don't forget to time the motion) This has helped me SO many times in adding little details and nuances to characters that I didn't originally plan for.
Anyway, good luck on the rift, and keep posting. I'm looking forward to whatever you do next.
Cheers

Mattmos, M.e.L and safe5, thx alot for your mirrors, its awesome :_)
It took my not very long to animate, maybe 2 or three months, i really dont know since i made this on my "chomage" (money assurance when you dont have work) and i had a pretty messy life at that time :S
The longest part was learning how to do it, ii never modeled pants like this! Before, the shaolin kid as like a 40 years old dude, 7 feet tall and much more realistic.. Then som time later, i tried riggin him and it was a nightmare when skinning the shoulders so i decided to do a more cartoony version with Sphere as shoulder! I scaled him and changed the face, ShaolinKid was born! After i made a storyboard so i could see what ill do with it, that helped alot!
Then i exlpored PFLow wich i didnt know at that time, and spended many frustrating time trying to put all the nijas in the scene without crash!! :S
Anyways, animating was one of the funniest part of doin it, and the FX were cool too.
PFLow is awesome, Allan mCkays tutorials too!! :P
And i was kinda scared someone would figure SHKid looks like Krilin, cause now you know im a freakin huge DBZ fan :D
As always, thx for replies and im happy you enjoy it :D

awesome animation ! :D
Kragh
02-24-2005, 11:01 PM
Man, that was awesome!! I just replayed it over and over again. Congrats on that.
About the final, I liked it...but misunderstood it, as you have explained it to some others. Thought he realized the mistake himself. I think the problem is in the speed of his acting. The fastness between his "yeay, yeah right..." gesture, and when he realizes that the other guy´s telling the truth. Maybe he should first make a disbelieving face to the guy out of sight, before he turns his head to the camera....?....I don´t know. Even though I misunderstood the sequence, it was still cool. But I understand the problem in the animation, if you intended it otherwise...
For this you´ll get the three C's:
Cantastic
Cwesome
C you in some major production in the future...I´m sure you´ll make it.

Very nice! I've been watching on repeat for the last 20 mins. Really good fighting. Reminds me of Krillin from DBZ.
What codec does this use? I am getting audio but not the video.

02-25-2005, 01:17 AM
Hey Nick, nice animation you got there! Although to my humble opinion its not a five star animation, as secondary motion is missing in many occasions so the transitions from pose to pose are a bit too obvious. Maybe it would be ok if it was an ingame animation, but since this looks more like an intro, i'm a bit more picky with it! Also some small details could be avoided, like the transparent floor at the end, that shows his feet going under it.
Other than that, it looks very promishing project. It reminds me of those stick figure fights in flash. (http://www.stickpage.com/xiao.shtml) Are you going to do more of those scenes?
HapZungLam
02-25-2005, 01:38 AM
The animation looks fantastic and i like it because it is like playing those old classic fighting acade. My only complain is that the character isn't original enough. He is too simular to Kililin in DBZ

was fun to watch :applause: I like the video game style very much. :)
Wow! Awsome animation, and a wonderful 'game feel'. I really love to see people experimenting with animation like this.
One crit I can give tho, is that the part in the 'middle' of the animation, where he gets up and flies close to the camera...I think that that breaks the 'flow' of everything.
If you do decide to keep that part, perhaps instead of just flying to the camera and 'looking', he could do some cool martial arts type move...kind of a 'bring it on' thing. Just a suggestion. :)
Also-maybe add in some paralax scrolling in the background, perhaps something more stylalized than the photograph.
These are just little nit pics tho. It really is a FANTASTIC piece of animation!

02-25-2005, 08:11 AM
Yo guyz!
Well everything is right from what you said, and i dont think its finished enough to be finished..
I also need new animation skills cause when i made it, it was kinda the best i could do, and didnt find the way to improve it... but i knew it could be better, of course.
I also noticed that my character looked alot like krilin from DBZ, but i wanted to create a shaolin monk and sadly, i liked DBZ alot so it was destiny that i created something similar! :P
I wouldnt care if toryama would do a game featuring some DBZ beat em up game, but he didnt so i made something that would look like it :)
I know i can improve and i hope i will! But my main objective was to show that a Kungfu style beat em up could be cool, and im really glad that almost everyone thinked it would :)
Fighting games are soo cool but so much are just copys or they're just fast-and-cheap produces, and you guyz tells them that theyre still hot, as if theres not enough of them :)
When 3d gameplay camed out with tomb raider and company, its like if side scroling style disapeared, like if it was somthing old and crappy... But often with my friends we rent some 3d games that looks amazing, but they just dont bring the thrill we had when playing nes or Snes old stuff :S Some games are graphicly superb, but very boring.. Im pretty sure many of you ever played some game and imagined what it could look like, and thats what ive tryed to do. But if i would have a team, everyone could have bringed those ideas and im pretty sure an awesome game could have camed out of it! So much games are made with liscence restrictions, limited budget, and money making formulas.. I think the games should be made from fans, for fans. Nyways, i just hope that will motivate people to create some wicked game ideas, cause these days, i think some game publishers could make games people could play not only for three days, but for years :)
Another thing, I watched my website's stats ( www.shaolinkid.com (http://www.shaolinkid.com/) in the first post )
And only 2 japanese clients downloaded it.. It would be very cool if this forum would be more global, But i guess its a language issue...
BTW, shaolin soccer,DBZ, StreetFighter, Killer instinct and viewtifull joe were My main inspirations, that helped me to get motivation while doin this.
It may not be the fancyest 3d short ever made, but i hope it shows that you can have a gameplay idea without programmation in it, with low costs and that more people will watch shaolin soccer and play street fighter 3 online, comin soon on xbox lol
And Kobeone, ill try to post some wireframe view tomorow :)
Thx to everyone that helped me to mirror, and every critics i readed here where very constructive. Theres so much potential, we could do great things together!
Anyways i could talk bout it for hours so ill stop :P

hey Pinet, super boulot!
great job man! .. i saw this yesterday but didn't know what words to use then.. hehe..
yea in some shots, it looks like krilin, but not all the time, the head is bigger and "squarer" hehe.. The outfit is tiight!! I like the muscles too.
the white after effects explosions and kame-hamé's are great on this 3D scene.
- The "acting part" needs more work.. the animations are too stiff. when he falls down.. when he points his finger.. work on these a little.
- It's a good piece of animation.. and since you're having it mirrored so much.. you definitely should have your contact info on it, at least your email !! website link is ok, but maybe a - direct link to you should be good, non?
good job man, bonne continuation

I really like the effects in your short. Do you do it in 3D or 2D?
Pinet
02-26-2005, 07:25 PM
Like i said soo much, thx for comments!
I agree the end part needs more work, but when i did it ( not so long ago ) that wast the best i could do and it was my first time i engaged in a bigger project, so i was becoming very tired of working on it, so i lefted it as it was. My main objective anyways wasnt really to make it perfect, it was more to show the concept and encourage people to do videogame like movies :)
It was also a tribute to DBZ, Naruto, Shaolin soccer and beat em up video games :D
Like i said before, i already have a job so i dont really need alot of contact info and i think my website should do it, if someone really wants to contact me :)
If it inspires people and some beat em up crazy game come out, i would be all happy!
Im getting out of the frontpage soon so th frenzy around it will soon end, Thx too all for comments, mirror and exposure :)
The delivery short is a good movie, i wish it good success and if you didnt saw it already, its on the frontpage!
I really hope next time i post somethin about the shaolinkid in the future, will include a full
playable level, that would be awesome :)
I also still think a Bittorrent section for the finished work animation part would be really helpfull to distribute peoples realisations, well see in the future what happens , i just saw on another discussion some moderators were working on it! :buttrock:
For the FX, they are almost all composited with after effects, since my 3dmax scenes were pretty much packed up with already. The 6 explosions when he jumps in the air and throw fireballs are rendered in max, and the last explosion is done in max 2. i composited the rest in After effects!

I learned 3d at Icari in montreal, quebec 5 years ago! I learned particule flow stuff on CGTalk and with Allan Mckay tutorials and particleFX.com tutorials!
Hehe i like the cow with the boy when it walks :)
At the end it looks like its slow motion, when the kid runs! the cow stays slow but the kid may move faster since hes small! But model and riggin looks cool too.

zuzezuko, i didnt learned animation there.
Im pretty sure rare are the 3D schools that teaches students complete animation techniques.
I guess 2D animation schools are better to learn animation, since 3D schools often tends to do a more general formation. But things may have changed, wich such learning methods as animationmentor.com n such!

I hope thats not too bad, cause i wouldnt like any other sound track!
I just hope that more person will see Stephen Chow movies, cause the soundtrack is the opening of Shaolin Soccer. I gain no money from that clip, i hope i aint bad using that soundtrack :(
I dunno how it may cost to buy the rights, or even if they are for sale!
I feel kinda bad about it, but that soundtrack was fitting perfect, and i try like in Shaolin Soccer to promote kungfu not by dance, signing or Soccer, but by movies! I just hope copyrights owners from that soundtrack thinks that way, or will never hear about that clip, cause i may be in trouble..
I just hope that people see that in this clip, i didnt invented many stuff, but that i made kinda a mix of everything i liked in DragonBallZ, Shaolin Soccer, Street Fighter, Naruto, Viewtifull Joe, and others.
If just hope that i didnt offended anyone for using that soundtrack, and that its not an evil deed. I used it cause i think it was perfect for what i was doin. Maybe that showing it to the others would be the illegal part about using Shaolin Soccer intro, since i own the original DVD.
Nyways, if im getting sued for using Shaolin Soccer soundtrack and a character that looks like Krylin from DBZ, i just hope that people will remember ShaolinKid like a positive experience!
I think Raymond Wong made the music for kungfu hustle too, so i guess shaolinKid is kinda a publicity for Kungfu Hustle, coming in american theatres soon!
Sorry for that post, but Xiao mentioned music copyrights, and i felt like i should tell how i felt bout it..
hehehe, Allan McKay, i learned PFLow and particles technique with your websites tutorials! Thnx.

Wow Pinet,
that was awesome, I love how fluid you kept the movement and pacing despite keeping to a very gaming like sense of timing. Wonderful choreography thorughout the entire fight, and I particulary liked the effect with wich the bodies disperse after his ariel attack. Can't wait to see what else you produce!

Hey Pinet,
Like I said before, very cool stuff. I love the idea of fleshing out game play before there is an engine and other mechanics implemented. It's a great tool for figuring out if a game concpet would be, overall, fun to play in the end. You'll have to keep us up uptodate on where it goes from here. I think it would make a fantastic handheld title.

Alright i gotta say that was really sweet, and yes i am also a huge fan of DBZ and when I first saw ur character i thought it was krillin for a sec lol.
Now I really like how you made it look like a game and then faded it into making it look like a realtime animation, also I really like the "Ki" effects like how u did the Ki Balls and the Kamehameha Wave. Pretty sweet shit dude.
I myself am getting into animation but im not all that great, i mean im alright at animating when i take my time but i need to get better at modeling, i have never once made my own character which is pretty sad. I like your character tho.
Btw his his clothing (not the belt but the shirt and pants) being processed thru a cloth simulator or is it just modeled as part of the character? Just curious because I have ClothFX and it seems to work ok some of the times but yea.
All in all dude I really like your character and animation man keep it up.

Yo jay!
I think drawing helps alot with modeling. Also, by drawing you can come up with original characters. I dunno if you draw, but you can learn it, and if your like it, you can become good. You just need to put time and interest in it. Its like learning a kungfu technique, by doin it over and over again, with motivation you can become better than some guy that is drawing for long time but is lazy and not very motivated. But all come for the might that leads you to do something. Sorry, i just watched 36 and return to 36th chamber so im kinda kungfu minded right now, but im pretty sure that what i say is right! Unless you have an handicap that makes you unable to draw, you can become good with intensive training, or if your young, you have all the time! The main thing is to love what you do.
For the clothes, I wish i had skills with simcloth or cloth FX, but modeling cloth and skining it to the biped was a simpler solution. There is no cloth simulation, only the modeled cloth deforming accordingly to the rig . Takes some time to learn, maybe you can go to some 3d school or you can also learn it from tutorials on the net with help from forums like CGTalk. Thats the hard way to do it, but its not impossible!
And remember that drawing is very helping in 3d, it helps understanding and planify how to do something. it prepares your mind for what youll be doing, from story boards to animation, modeling and lighting. Practice makes you become something in anything youll make in life, it also applies to drawing. If you think animation is something you would like to do, the more you love it, the more you practice, the more you'll make amazing things.
Anyways, happy you enjoyed it!

thank you,
But yes i am young, im 14 and im a freshman so its early and a great time indeed i think to start learning to draw. Im currently using 3d studio max 7, i've bean using discreets line of products for about 2 years now and i want to start actually trying to make a character and animation. But since i've bean messing around with the program for 2 years, i have good knowledge of the program just not in animating. Like modeling i know alot about it and i can model great off of refrences, im just not good a making my own stuff but ill learn, But now and im being honest about this, after seeing ur animation since im such a big dbz fan i want to jump into animation and learn the ins and outs of it cause its just so awesome. I really don't want to use bones to animate i kinda want to stay away from that, so i want to use character studio since im mostly familiar with the biped and stuff. But thanks again.
