View Full Version : Xbox’s Successors system specs leaked…

These specs are being thrown all over the internet with some of the more interesting parts being:

The Xbox’s Successor (Codename Xenon) is powered by a 3.5+ GHz IBM PowerPC processor and a 500+ MHz ATI graphics processor. Xenon has 256+ MB of unified memory. Xenon runs a custom operating system based on Microsoft® Windows NT®, similar to the Xbox operating system. The graphics interface is a superset of Microsoft® Direct3D® version 9.0. Each core supposedly runs at 3.5+ GHz. The Xenon CPU can issue two instructions per clock cycle per core. At peak performance, Xenon can issue 21 billion instructions per second, and the front side bus (FSB) bandwidth peak is 10.8 GB/sec for reads and 10.8 GB/sec for writes, over 20 times faster than for Xbox. Note that the 22.4+ GB/sec main memory bandwidth is shared between the CPU and GPU. If, for example, the CPU is using 2 GB/sec for reading and 1 GB/sec for writing on the FSB, the GPU has 19.4+ GB/sec available for accessing RAM. Now the best part of this is for us CG people, that the 256+ MB of onboard ram can “be used for all reading or all writing or any combination of the two. Translated into game performance, the GPU can consume a 512×512-bpp textures in only 47 microseconds”

Now that would be crazy! http://cgtalk.com/images/smilies/eek.gif
PS: Still no word on the Hard Drive, unfortunately...

i'm starting to believe some of the 'leaked' specs [they seem to be getting more and more realistic]. but i'll wait till E3 to see what is going to happen.

The Xenon CPU can issue two instructions per clock cycle per core

is this parallel processing?

if IS the case, having the ability to chew up and spit out tons of textures will make the Xbox2 [xboxNext, xbox360, NexTBox, whatever] look very good. ummmm, normal mapping heaven.

then again, i also heard Nintendo's next machine will be just as powerful, the PS3 will run faster if you buy a Sony Toaster Oven that has the cell processor in it, and i'll be the next Miss America. don't believe everything, this could just be a xbox-fanboy dreamin up the perfect machine... or not.

"NexTBox"... hah. I hadn't heard that one. I'd say it'll be a cold day in hell before Microsoft releases a product that bears a shared name with a Steve Jobs product.

This contradicts the other leaked spec, so I guess they cancell themselfs out.

all I know is the anticipation is killing me! can't wait to see what all the machines have to offer!

LOL

Anyways, until its launched, I don't believe any specs I read.

While the Xbox2 specs are much better than Xbox1 specs, it seems they will pale in comparison to the Playstation3 with Cell technology.

Even though both Xbox2 and Playstation3 will both use IBM PowerPC processors, Microsoft seems to be locked out of the Cell technology arrangement between IBM, Sony and Toshiba.

so are you playing games on these consoles yet to make that assumption?

problem is while one of the 2 consoles will be more powerfull then the other will the weaker one maybe easier programmable (for example direct x stuff is know for long time but the cell is very new stuff)

If this is true... I will find a way to up the memory and this will be the core of a personal Mental Ray render farm.

I don't think a faster machine makes a better console, not even for artists. If I don't remember wrong, they managed to make Metroid Prime really nice looking on that 'weak machine' GameCube, as everyone say it is.

I think I'll keep staying on Sony's and Nintendo's side until Microsoft's side gets some really good games. I have seen really few and I won't buy the most expensive console to get less. The thing is, I'm not the one to pack my console up with illegal stuffs. :p

Isn't 256 megs of memory for both the graphics and all other tasks rather low? We have video cards with 256 megs alone these days.

Remember that Consoles don't have a advanced OS to run like Windows XP. ;)

I think i'll just wait until it comes out to see what the specs are....

I read in an XBOX book yesterday (it was on sale for 4 bucks, I thought Id have a look), and it said that the XBOX console is running a 600 or 700 MHz processor with 64MB of ram. Its just tweaked specifically to gaming which makes it do such amazing things.

Yar, but it'll only have to drive a crappy resolution TV, not three 21" high res LCD monitors (been dreaming again :)).

nahh there you are wrong the new systems have to be hdtv ready which is more then double resolution then normal ntsc/pal whatever so more memory is needed

ignoring the resolution limitations, it still seems that 256 is rather low for the entirety of a modern game. Warcraft 3 for instance took up several hundred megs easily, and that's ignoring the memory reserved for graphics.

Stop comparing a console's memory needs with a PC.
Ofcourse 256MBs sounds low to PC guys - espesially seeing as how you can barely even run a bloated OS like XP on only 256 (of you can at all) - let alone any actual applications. They are not PCs - they run a specialized, trimmed down OS that ran very well with only 64MBs of RAM on the XB1 - now it's got 4 times as much memory with the XB2 (assuming these rumors are correct).

Also the resolution of HDTV pretty much negates any higher resolution advantage that PCs have now in gaming.

To prove Hazdaz point, let's look at it this way;

I have played Halo (1) on the XBOX, sure today it looks crap, but still, it ran smoothly. I then tried to run it with the same configuration on my 1.6ghz, 256mb ram, and 64 mb gfx-card. I were forced to run at lowest to run at all.
(I know, there is improved graphics on the PC-version, but I changed it to look somewhat the same)

So you see, as he said, it's really specialised components in a console, and the OS is REALLY small. :)

Hazdaz

INACTION - not only that, but when you were running it on that 1.7Ghz PC, it was over twice as fast as what the XB is clocked at (700Mhz)!

I know you can't really compared MHz between 2 different systems, BUT having said that, then using your example (of a 700 Mhz XB1 is about the same as a 1.7 GHz PC) then the XB2 will give you the "equivalent" performance of a 8.5 GHz PC. I know that is extrapolating the speed increase too much, but even if it is 1/2 that, that is still very impressive.

is this parallel processing?

It's the same instruction level parallelism that's so commonplace these days. Supporting more
instructions in parallel requires a lot of resources in the front of the processor's pipeline to
search for opportunites for instruction-level parallelism. The Xenon and Cell processors are
far, far simpler, eschewing clever logic in favor of clock speed, and putting the burden of
finding parallelism on the compiler and developer. Since there's only ever going to be one
binary target for a given generation XBox or PlayStation, this is a pretty trivial sacrifice, since
it's not supposed to be a general-purpose processor anyway.

There are ppl that actually think the GC is a 'weak' machine? Compared to what? Power-wise, it's #2 of the 3.

Hazdaz exactly! Everyone should remember that the games being created for a console is especially made for a certain types of components so it's like going to the local tailor to get your jeans. :)

Tell that to all the people I have been spoken to. I know the GC is 2nd place in power, but all people see is oooooooooh sooonyyyyy or wank microsoft wank or something like that.

Edit*
Forgot to say that I own NONE of the consoles. Only wanted to clear that one out so you guys don't jump at me for being a Nintendo-fanboy or something. I simply hate people for dissing a whole console only because the games aren't cool or non-childish, that's all. :)
