View Full Version : texturing a cable/wire..??
essencedesign 02-20-2005, 03:05 AM Any hints guys and gals on texturing a cabel / wire...I've tryed the following
...tryed building a procedural...but the texture dosen't folow the curves of the wire..
..tryed creating a box..uving..applying texture...then rail extruding...dosen't work because I'm trying to extrude a box a guess...
...same as above..but rail clone.....this though dosen't make a solid object....just a bunch of cloned boxes along the curve.....
...hmm..trying to come up with a way , has anyone had to do this before and if so could you shed a little light on your technique... :banghead:

On the Map tab, on the bottom section is a button labled UV Spider - its designed to help
UV map stuff like that. In fact i think theres a tutorial on using it to map a winding road up
on the Newtek site in the Tutorials section.
otherwise, dpending on the complication of the object, you could straighten it out in
an Endomoprh, the cylindrically map it.

The "old fashioned" way to do this is first make a straight version, texture map that, then morph it into the bent version. I suppose you could also start with a straight version, UV map it with a cylindrical map, then bend it.

I thought about uving a morphed version...what i'd like to have is a "template" of sorts , a uv'd or cubic, cyndrical whatever mapped "piece" that I could extrude to any wire size or shape that I want, the character I am working on has many wires bending many different ways....I could just flatten them all out, but I've got all my curves saved in a layer, and I't just be cool to take my "template" piece, exrude each wire and be done with it...be left with only one surface to mess with...
thanks for the help guys...Lightwave does lack a bit in the UVing dept I guess...

You can create a UV map on the template object youre using to create the cable from. Then when you do a rail extrude youll have the option of creating UVs for the extruded object.

Larry,
Thanks mate,...played around with the mapping in the rail extrude..worked wonderfully..
