View Full Version : Sword in the stone clip
Hyphen 02-19-2005, 07:44 AM This is my first 3D animation done in max. The exercise was to take IK-Joe and convey weight. So, i had him reenact the sword in the stone :P

Good for your first!
-the arms are like hanging in mid air in the first pose
-when he is taking his first step, the hips drops before the right foot settle down. this is the position that the hips move the least
-his right foot steps super backward in the end
these are pretty much enough for a first animation:). I recommend doing walk cycles before you move on to other animations, they help a lot!
Good luck.

You need to work on the first pose. He's just standing still and moving his head very linear. Why would he look at the sword when his body is already pointed at the sword?
It would be better to let him walk into the screen, see the sword and grab it. He might stand with his back towards the place where the sword will be, sword drops, Joe get's startled, turn around and suprisingly there is a magic sword! He's gotta have that one! Something like that, try to tell a story, not that I did that with my first animation, but it's always good to start with the story telling.
Make him move in the first pose. Now he stands there like a gorilla only moving his head, that's wrong, dead and boring :)
It would be better to use a quicktime compatible compresor next time so we can view it frame by frame and take a closer look to things
I like how he steps towards the sword, but keep in mind that he would rotate his hips so that they favor the foot that's on the rock. The weight would also shift to his left foot since he'll be leaning on that, right now he'll fall. The same for the next step, altough there seems to be a nice hipmotion in it, moving the center his weight, that is good.
the pulling out of the rock animation looks good, I would love to see it frame by frame to study it some more, there's something with it, I dunno, but it looks good. The only thing I see at this moment is that he gets the sword out to easy. He takes it out with not too much effort, but he tips over when it's above his head, it looks like it becomes heavy all of a sudden.
