View Full Version : video cards
rickmann 02-19-2005, 03:44 AM Hello everyone, I am somewhat new to the laptop scene. But I was wondering? Can you remove and upgrade video cards in laptops? I am planning on buying a new laptop, and from the searching that I have been doing on the tech forum the most important issue seems to be the video cards.
So if I am going to buy a laptop is there any certain KEYWORD I should be looking for to know if I can remove and upgarde the card at a later date?
Thanks
Rick

No, you cant remove laptop video cards and install a new one.
At least it hasnt been the case in most laptops to date.
The future laptops may provide some upgradability (ex: laptops with PCIe), but when it comes to laptops, the first rule of thumb is you give up upgradability for portability.

There are some very pricy laptops that feature upgradable vid cards via PCI-E expension.

thanks

I think it's safe to say all laptops made in the last 5 years (more or less) can do OpenGL. But they vary in which version of the OpenGL spec and performance etc.
And if you're looking on eBay, don't you just send the seller an email to ask questions or something?

If you 're looking for a card that can be upgraded look for the Geforce 6800 go or Radeon Mobility X800. They're the 2 most powerful PCI-express cards out now. They can be found in all systems based on the Clevo D900, which includes the Sager 9860 (I just placed my order yesterday), GoBoxx 2200, Alienware MJ12m 7700 (and Area 51m 7700-same system just marketed towards gaming), Hypersonic Aviator EX7, Cyberpower X7-9000, and quite a few others.
And then the Quadro Fx Go1400 will be out in March. It's a pro card optimized for OpenGL. Right now it's available in the Dell M70, Eurocom D900 Phantom, and the Hypersonic EX7.
Also, be very careful on Ebay. A laptop is an expensive item and I've been hearing about a lot of scams and rip-offs lately. There are a few posted on notebookforums.com.

Hey zeroice013, thanks for the feedback but actually I am no longer looking for the top of the line because I relize that I just can't afford it! I am just starting to hear things like Open GL and that I need to look for it in a decent video card. But when I am on ebay, I notice that some come with ATI or Nvidia cards but it doesn't say open GL next to it, and most of the sellers I ask have no idea, they keep telling me that if I know where to look in the OS then they will find out and let me know. And yes you are very correct on the ebay scams!! I have already been taken for one and I am still in the process of trying to get my money back!!
Thanks
Rick
