Does anyone have any tips/tricks/suggestions for rim lighting XSI hair? I'm looking for a lighting in XSI solution rather than a "do it in post" solution. Any help, or links to tutorials, would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

I don't know what type of look you want to achieve, but here's a test I did today.

So, a Light casting shadows(the important thing is keeping umbra ~ 0). Also, enabling transparancy gives a softer look.

edit:
btw, shadow maps aren't used in that test render. Forgot to uncheck it.

I would do a half-XSI half-post solution. I'd setup a pass with the rim lights on black. That either be a pass with only specular enabled and a custom lightset for the rim light. The rim lights could be one large area light (longer to render, no shadow maps) or it could be a bunch of spot lights next to each other to have a smoother rim.

Then in post you simply composite this pass on top of the beauty pass and make tweaks if you need.

Sorry if you're looking for a 100% 3D solution.

Thanks for the replies you guys. I'll give it a try on Tuesday when I'm back at work. I've used Shave quite a bit in Maya, and I know XSI hair is based on Shave, but I couldn't get it to work the way I thought it would.

Thanks again.
