There was an entire thread here recently devoted to Akira bikes, none were animated though.
Overall a believable feeling of motion and the character looks great too. I notice however that there is not much variation in the water spray from the back wheel and the light trail should maybe softened up a bit
Either way, great stuff. :)

I love it. It's so much more lifelike and engrosing than the movie if you ask me. Akira was playing at a local movie theater for the midnight show a week or two ago, so I got to see it in pretty good detail. I never really got sucked totaly into the movie because of all the problems with 2d animation, (not to mention the redone voices which were very distracting if you're used to the old ones). This clip of yours imediatly draws me in though. If Akira looked like this it'd be one of the best movies ever, I'd say.

great job, it has great motion in the character and the bike, the camera moves pretty cool too.
when he pulls away from the camera it would be cool to see some electricity surging around the wheels, like lightning.
anyhoo thought it was fun to watch, and will show it to a few friends. Kuzz Akira is a favorite of many of my friends.

Perfect work of camera i can feel the speed and wind in my face looking at it :). But the water lacks somewhat, it looks wierd, try to make it random, but overall it is best animation seen for long time.

yes I would have to agree on this, as well as some sparks shooting of the cranckcase/clutch basket cover on the facing camera side to show it is dragging, because it sure looks like it does.
Also when he pulls away into a wheelie and then bounces into another you should make it appear as though he accelerates away faster because as all know a wheelie requires a harder acceleration @ a higher RPM, also if in the bounce its a quicker jerk, snatch like he just grabbed a gear causing the last wheelie.
I do not want to sound harsh or picky, because it is way better than my capabilites, but I use to roadrace and race dirtbikes so maybe I can give some insight??? Though I never raced a eletromagnetic front and rear driven hyper cycle.:)

very impressive work.
Though I agree with someone's past comment about picking up more speed for the wheelie, I'd have to say that overall, it's still quite outstanding.
bravo

I like the camera work, the shading looks great as well as the modeling. The only thing I noticed is that the water spraying off the tire looks a bit uniform, should be spread out slightly. Another thing is the the reflection on the windshield looks a little too shiny, could tone it down slightly. One last thing I did notice, when the lights come off the back break lights to give the blur effect the bike should be moving faster. I mean the light coming off the back is a blur effect visually so the bike should be taking off at high speeds. Just some things I noticed, other than that looks friggin awesome. :buttrock:

Nice work! Just one tiny thing I noticed is the light trails that seems to come from just below the lights, not directly from them. Other than that, outstanding.

09-17-2002, 09:19 AM
Well thanks alot everyone...
I never expected such a response. I may even post another one... ;) I agree with the comments of the bike speed. It should accelerate faster to get the wheelie going but my thought at the time was that its a big bike with lots of power and its only a small wheelie so it could get a bit off the fround just on the throttle.
As for the light trails. Yep, they are slightly off . (Doh) but appart from that I was trying to get the feeling in the film were the trails are longer than the motion blur. Its a bit like slow motion photography on a long exposure....
I'm wafling... I'll post another one soon but don't be too harsh ;)
Cheers,
E;-D

Realy great work. I love the lighting and the overal atmosphere.
I'd love to see the scene where they fight on a bike and one character falls of. The camera was placed infront of the bike, close to the ground, as the clown (if I remember this correctly) falls of in slowmotion, as he hits the ground the speed goes back to realtime. A realy nice pice.
Your animation looked realy good.

looks excellent.
first time i read the manga i was captivated by the motion and design of their bikes. i dislike these modern asian style bikes but these bikes were just too futuristic to pass. and the movement, they look so fast.
and you seem to have captured it as an idea.
the water could use some extra work.
love the motion of the clothes.
hey we did the same at my job for our show reel

I downloaded this at work, and watched it cycle at least twenty times before I noticed my art director had come into the room and was waiting for me to notice.:p
Very, very nice. I'd hate to be picky in any way, but...the front suspension seems to flex at the headstock, like a swingarm. The bike in the comic has two sets of conventional dampers, which compress along their length . Unless of course you've taken artistic licence, and made them into telelevers!:D
evandavies
09-17-2002, 12:39 PM
Erm....
The suspension should be working along its length... but then again there isn't that much reference for details of the bike. Even different posters from the film have slight changes in the bike...
Hey Zeb thats pretty cool... Like the Japanese disproportional models. I'd love to see Kaneda done in the same style with a big head. hehehe

quite impressive. I don't know the anime that it is in reference too, so I just think it looks neat.
The wheelies almost look like the bike is starting to fly (like it is going too fast and the air is picking it up) not because of increased speed.
Still a very good job. :applause:

I am not beating up on you, it is VERY impressive. I was only trying to help.
Yeah, a bike this heavy with a rotating heavy driven front wheel would take a little more to loft.
The landing is great though, good suspension settle and rebound.
It is great, just cannot wait to see the updater, revised movie.:scream: :applause:
