what file format can i use, i'm sure i've seen a file converter somewhere to convert max scenes to maya
anyone help?

install for max, install for maya...

In max try to find the pluggin to export in OBJ
Maya will load those files .. it work well
Windows > Settings/Preferences > Plug-in Manager . clic load .OBJ)

A|W do a free .3ds file importer.
Look on the site, it work really well, but doesnt support animation yet, only objects.
Moving a Maya .ma or .mb to Max is a bit more difficult, but the .obj exporter, and objtomax importer script for max works ok.
I wish Maya and max would natively support each others file types :(
Bit hard to use Brazil in maya ;)

well, Splutterfish does plan on adding Maya support..
some day.. :)
exporter now...
and it's working very well...
it exports a lot of stuff !!!! poly, morph/blend shapes, anim I think...
