In max try to find the pluggin to export in OBJ

Maya will load those files .. it work well
Windows > Settings/Preferences > Plug-in Manager . clic load .OBJ)

A|W do a free .3ds file importer.

Look on the site, it work really well, but doesnt support animation yet, only objects.

Moving a Maya .ma or .mb to Max is a bit more difficult, but the .obj exporter, and objtomax importer script for max works ok.

I wish Maya and max would natively support each others file types :(

Bit hard to use Brazil in maya ;)
