View Full Version : dual xeon passive-cooling enough?
alexx 02-18-2005, 04:36 PM my sys admin just ordered the single parts to build me a new render-box.
it is a dual xeon 3.06.
when we got it, we noticed that those processors are only passive cooled.
my question: is that enough to keep them running?
in a server maybe but in a render-computer that has 100% cpu usage over days or weeks?
the renderfarm is placed in an air conditioned server room.
any help and experiences appreciated
cheers

Well, it strongly depends on Your PC chassis. THe series You bought is adressed to the rackmount enclosures (1U or 2U), where motherboard is placed in horizontal position and it is directly exposed to the set of 2,3 someitmes 4 80mm fans. The trick is these fans are responsible for cooling all devices that are inside, that is why CPUs can have only radiators.
We use such a setup for Opterons, but all of them are put in 1U 2U. If I were You I would not risk overheating the CPU.
What are the enclosures You use for Your render farm ...??

thanx so far.
in this case it is an old big tower we reused.
so the cooling issue will be a real problem, since it is no 19" rack case with propper cooling.
sounds a lot like i will be adding active cooling to stay on the safe side..
nothing is more annoying than unreliable render machines.
cheers & thanks again
