Goody goody, my ROCK Xtreem Ti 3.4Ghz has arrived and what a beast it is! I want to divide my single 60gig hard disk (I was being stingy not to go for the raid) in to the following partitions:

C: Windows 15 Gb
D: Swap 5 Gb
E: Apps 20 Gb
F: Data 20 Gb

Two problems I'm facing; firstly how do I best do this (particularly how do I find out which new partition is nearest to the outer circumferance)

Also can anyone reccomend a good defraging software? Thanks
Cyphyr

When you're installing windows, you'll get the option to create partitions. If you have already installed windows, then partition magic I believe will take care of your problems, although i've never used it myself.

As for finding out the partition closer to the outer rim...why do you need to know? *curious*

I would say in windows setup, make the first partition for system (5 GB are enough, what do you want to install in it except Windows and maybe swapfile? You also have the apps partition! You will need as much as space as possible for the data, take there 30 instead)

Then, after installation of windows, go to the drive manager (don't know how it's called in english OS) where you can make an logical partition etc for the rest.

I don't think that the difference where partition is located on the outer part makes such a difference. You need them all, system files from C:, Application Data, temp files, and the data where you store your edited images. How do you want to predict which is the most needed?

When you need disk performance, raid, or at least two single disks, one for sys and swapfile and the other for data so they can be accessed simultaneously.

A good defragmentation program is O&O Defrag, (6.5 currently)

During setup its also possible to delete this partition or just reformat it -
no need for Partition magic there.

Of course you can make all Partitions during setup, but it's not necessary and more comfortable afterwards.

Thanks for the replies

I need to know which partition is closest to the rim because the outer most part of a spinning disk is spinning fastest and hence the data is accesed fastest. Thats where I want to put the root drive and the swap drive.

any ideas

If you really must partition up your drive (I use a single 450gig partiton here) then:

3 gig swap (assuming you have a gig of ram)
5 gig windows
the rest for everything else

The outside will be the first partition you set up.

I don't think you can decide where to place a partition physically on your hard drive. I may be wrong, though.

In any case, l would recommend only three partitions:

1 - Windows - 5 GB
2 - Swap File - 3 GB
3 - Everything else (no need to create other partitions, really)

You can't using windows tools, unless you format the drive and delete the partition.

Partition Magic is indeed very intuitive and easy to use but I still dont know where my partitions are physically on my disk.
