View Full Version : Need help with dual PC Maya system
audim 02-17-2005, 11:30 PM The company I'm working for is buying a new workstation for me. I'm working mostly with Maya and would like to get a dual Xeon or Opteron system. 3GB Ram should be enough. In my opinion a Geforce Fx 4400 is not worth the price. A Geforce 6800 Ultra with eventually softmod should be good enough.
The price for the system doesn't really matter. But of course we don't want to throw the money out of the window. Boxxtech is in my opinion to expensive. Alienware, HP? Or buying the components I want and build it by myself (did this always with my workstations at home)? But what components? Mobo, Ram, Xeon 3.6/3.8 or Opteron.
So what is the best I can get for maybe $5000 - 6000? What mobo is the best for what dual CPU system?
I have to do much more research, but maybe you can give me some ideas?
Thanks
Steffen

Just get a BOXX. You can get a fab system for that money. Just customize one of their dual Opteron systems out....remember that Maya doesn't support any GeForce vid boards.

problem with boxxtech is, that I can't get the graphic card I want with it. The 6800 Ultra has the performance and no problems with maya. The high price of the FX 4400 is not worth it. I can softmod the 6800.

remember that Maya doesn't support any GeForce vid boards.
even though they are not officially supported doesn't mean they don't work. With the exception of the low end geFroce cards, the higher end units work just fine.
Suggestions:
Motherboard
Tyan K8WE nForce4 dual Opteron motherboard.
Dual Opteron 252 (New stepping, 90nm, SSE3)
2gb Crucial PC3200
nVidia 6600 in dual for multimonitor support will work fine
Tyan has SATA, SATA II and SCSI 320. There are some SATA II drives available out there, Seagate 120gb.
Also, this board has a dual chipset, providing double the PCI-E lanes available.
The Combo of the Tyan board and these new stepping Opterons support 1ghz. HT bus.
If you have to buy a pre built system, you can't get much better than BoXX. These items I recomended (except the video cards) are in their new 7300 series workstation.

Thank you MadMax.
Sounds good. I will do some research on these components.
Do you think the dual opteron 252 is better for maya or the dual xeon 3.6 em64t?
Hey, this Tyan board seems to be pretty good.

Take a look at the iWill DK8N motherboard. It is the one that Boxx is using in their high end machines. The same price as the Tyan and I have heard lots of good things about the post-purchase service. I have a dual Opteron machine with the PC2700 ECC, 0+1 Seagate RAID, a Matrox board and some other goodies....the board is nice, but I looked at the specs on the iWill and I almost thought about switching.

Yes, BoXX uses this AND the Tyan boards in their systems.
However I would NOT consider the DK8N, it's "outdated" technology. DK8N uses the nVidia nForce 3 250gb chipset, which if you had asked this question 6 months ago I'd say go for it.
The K8WE uses the nforce4 chipset, and it is the only board on the market using 2 complete chipsets. The nForce4 provides such a huge list of features over the nForce3 that the nForce4 is a no brainer.
iWill has one coming out also, the DK8E, but it uses only a single nForce4 chipset, but still a good option if you don't have to have the highest end available.

Hey Ed,
if I get the Boxxtech workstation with a 6800 ultra instead with one of the listed videocards , do we still have the full warranty and support?

See, this makes it all the more easy for me to recommend BoXX.
They will go out of their way to get you what you want.

I just ordered a Boxx 7300 and because I was a CGTalk member was also able to get a discount. More importantly I got a kick-ass machine for about 4200...and was therefore able to get a LCD 21' monitor to have a complete setup for under $5000. I rersearched theis exhaustively which is counter to my impulse buying habits and was finally sold by the quality of the computer and the incredible service from Ed Carracappa of Boxx...he was totally open to discussing what i needed and in general speced out a system before he even mentioned the name Boxx..no hard sell just simple presentation...I compared AlieWare, GamePC and Dell...Perhaps Boxx is a little pricier but I don't have the time to build a system (I'd rather be animating and modelling and working on my short) and I wanted a PROVEN system for people who do what I do -create digital content...Ed was nice enough to put several proposals my way and after I finally ordered both he AND his assistant followed up in seperate emails...
If this support continues...and I am betting my mouse and keyboard it does...then I got what I wanted...Great Machine..A Very Good Price....Great Support ..and a free T-Shirt...
