Hi, ive been working on a space freighter model, heavily based on the Sulaco the movie 'Aliens'. I thought id have a go at replicating similar shapes and i think ive been doing quite well. Ive done quite a lot of touch up in Photoshop but it still isnt all finished.
Let me know what you think
Created in : Truespace 6

I really like the model, but, you should really add more Ligth in your scene to show the details !

Yeah, too dark. Until I can see more, no comment.

cheers

The reason why i made it so dark was to create images similar to the ones below (images from the Sulaco Spaceship in the Movie Aliens), whereby they used very small amounts of light to make it more atmospheric and realistic.

But i supose more detail can be seen in these, my modle isnt quite finished and throughout th enext week i shall be adding far more detail, my main problem is texturing

ok,ok

well, for the shader, your model look a little bit too "plastic" to be a spaceship, and to add more details, you don't need to model everything in the same "piece": you can model a part and "add-it" after to your main model,

i am perhaps wondering if u should continue the model in a different piece of software, as Truespace can be very limiting, most of the detail i want to add now is texturing and bump mapping but i might add some little gun turrets and some way of giving scale the whole ship.

Ok here is a quick update, ive changed loads of stuff and added a few bits. I havent touched this up in photoshop yet either so the colours arent quite how i want them, let me know what you think

i think im gonna add some more spikes to the front of the ship and some docking ays full of fighter crafts, if u got any ideas please let me know, im beginnin to lack the imagination at the moment

I'd put some lights on the ship hull, you know like a star trek ship, they got a light to show the code on the disc and stuff like that

It would add lots of details for the eye to look at, that's important
And if you don't have this detail you could just model stuff where the hull lights are pointed at...

You can do it in a subtle way without breaking the "I wanna make it dark" rule, which I approve by the way

Looks cool, but I wonder if the spikes couldn't be changed to look more functional, like on the Sulaco. Right now they kinda look like decoration.

yes, i knew i was missing something, i should definatly add some small lights around it and your right about the spikes, i should make them far more detailed, i wan tto go for more of a transmitter shape as i believe thats what they are for

ok i have completely remade the spikey bits, this time they have a lot more detail and variation, i havent really properly textured them to my liking and i plan to add some lighting to show them off a little more. Ive also added a few spot lights but im struggling with places to put them, i might make some kind of rigging around certain parts of the ship with spotlights attatched e.g. perhaps it is having repairs done in a space dock.

Oh man it's starting to get a sweet shape, I love it!

The lights on the spikes, yeah, lemme suggest you to put some lights starting from the base of the spikes pointing forward, I think it will work but that's just a suggestion, I'm no expert plus I still have to finish my own starship, that thread is getting OLD eheheh

Matski007

yeh, im gonna add some lights right at the end and some at the base

Your last render is really better !
I like the addition of details, a little bit more light and it will kick a** !!

i think.... im gonna add the lights and do a big render and do some stuff to it in photoshop cos im really liking it myself, oh and im also in the process of adding the docking bays

Matski007

oh here is the latest render, u can see i have added the docking bays, the next image should have loads of fighter ships coming out

It must be a HUGE docking bay ehehe, well have fun working today on your project and post an update once you feel you got a step further!

Don't ask me why but I thought you were going to model a docking bay for the huge ship to dock in! ehehehe, ok so its going to have the docking bay(s) for the fighters, nice, fine, gotcha finally

Matski007
02-25-2005, 01:32 PM
lol i should be more clear, what do you think of the latest images?, the next thing i do create tho will be a dock for the freighter itself, much like the ones in star trek

jampoz

The very last one works really good to me, the docks are cool looking

I'm just not sure about the green on the spikes, it's weird looking you know
Maybe plain white/yellowish lights will work perfectly, you can add color on the surface itself instead of using weird lights... I dunno, maybe it's 'cause they're not soft but they look wrong to me, at first I couldn't understand if it was painted spikes or actual light

Just my impression anyway

PS: It's a really interesting ship you got there, dunno why there's such a lack of feedback from the community...

lol, they probl ylook at me an dmy work and think im just a petty newbie amatuer (which i am lol), the spikes actually have yellow and they arent lighting, funnily enough they use the same texture as the docks, but i do want to change them to more of a pure colour

Experiment with Falloff settings in your lighting to brighten up specific parts of your model and stilll keep the dark atmoshpere....it will help alot... ;)...it's hard for people to see therfore hard to comment....try some different lighting set ups as this one really is not doing your ship justice...

ok i made these two images sort of in hope that you might be able to see more, i made one with textures and lighting, and the other without textures and just basic lighting to show the actual shape.

If the lightsource here is a sun, then realistically the light would be much brighter. You'll notice that even in the reference image you posted there are some definite specular highlights.

jampoz
02-26-2005, 03:12 AM
Yeah Rebuilder, that's right!

Plus I'd focus into modeling before getting into rendering, I mean what's the point of covering it with skin if the bone structure ain't developed, yet

Don't mean to sound creepy, sorry eheheh

yeh your right, its force of habbit, the problem ive got is that im not a very good texturer at all and this is what im going to find the most challenging, although the way i have it textures im quite happy with

jampoz
02-26-2005, 06:47 PM
It's fun when you are not good in texturing but do it anyway, I'm doing the same these days working on my site, it's so damn fun ehehehehe

Well keep up the good work man, the more the detail the better the lights will look on it

Hi, this is my latest render, the background is something im working on for a games project but i thought it fit quite nicely with the freighter, let me know what you think

Sorry about the image, im at school and they have blocked ftp access so im having to sue a crappy image host, will change to my own host later.

Space image are caracterized by very high contrast and no reflected light. There is nothing surronding che ship so the light is will not be reflected. Try use a very shape and black shadow.
