the only thing i can crit, is the DOF. the nest with eggs in the background is really out of focus, whereas the front part, where the tree begins up to the mouse "end", is totally in focus. this looks a bit artificial.

but of course: forget that, the image is great!

What a cool crazy model! I love the detail on the rather odd facial features & the fur is very good too. The eyes are lovely & the lighting is great too- my only minor crit is that some of the feathers don't seem as tangible & realistic in terms of the lighting & setting. That's just my opinion anyway, but overall I think the little guy is great.

Refreshingly unique. One of the first things I thought when I looked at it was I liked the way it was comped in, especially the one foot touching the branch looks great. If I were to criticize one thing, it would be that I feel the edges around the eyes are rather harsh. However, it still works for me and perhaps the harshness just adds to the style of man meets mouse.

First of all, I want to say that your image has a great personality. And if you rendered this with Mental Ray alone (without any AO plugins), kudos for wrestling MR and winning. :thumbsup:

Next, I am giving a critique for ways to improve the image. It is my opinion, so don't take it as an attack or something. Furthermore, I love the community that is growing here, and I see the next step for "us," would be to have more in-depth critiques. It's amazing what can happen when people give you detailed thoughts on something...so here's my shot at it.

The main thing I would say, which has been pointed out by others briefly, is that the color range of the CG element differs from that of the photograph. Mainly the tree, which is very slighltly washed out in value and color saturation, has a lower color range than that of the character.

One easy way to fix this would be to use Photoshop Curves to adjust the trees color range to help match it to the character.

In my opinion though, you should also experiment with washing out the character instead. On the knees and left cheek especially, the shadowing is a darker than it should be, IMO. You can test this easily by opening your image in Photoshop and using the Threshold tool to preview the values; around the Threshold Level of 38, you can see what I mean.

Why is the shadowing too dark you ask? If you imagine yourself "travelling through" the whole image in three-dimensional space, you would notice that there is intense light on the back-left side of the tree. You hint to that by the glow effect on the left edge of the trunk - which I think is a great touch. Now the branch the character is standing on goes back in three-dimensional space, which you have alluded to by simulating depth of field with the blur tools. If this branch really went back in space, and if the character was really standing where he was, he would be catching a good deal of reflected light from the back side of the trunk.

I don't think too much editing would need be done to make the character seem more a part of the photograph, but I think it's worth a shot at least. I would just say try softening some parts up a bit, desaturate a wee bit here and there, and lighten up a couple areas. Then I think you'd really be ready for Exposé. :cool:
