View Full Version : 3D Map on Character
Poulpi 09-15-2002, 02:56 PM hello,
how i can use a 3d map on an animated character with no problem ?
the texture reference object is a good solution ?
thanks to you.

If you do have problems with texture sliding through the character, Id recomend to build a material that holds only your 3d texture attached to the color channal and luminocity and then bake it as a texture, then attach image you get from the baker for whatever you need you textor for.
The reason you need to attach it to luminocity is because baker takes lighting into account. But I think there should be an option to render a straight texture with no lighting.

It's not a good idea. 3D textures in Maya are only really good for stationary objects. The texture isn't really mapped, or wrapped to the object, it acts more like the object is carved from this block of texture. So when the character deforms, the texture will not deform with it.
When I first started with Maya I made this mistake, luckily the character was robotic so no there was no organic deformation, but I had to group about 40 shaders to 40 objects to get it to behave correctly.
Not recommended!

alphatron: As I said - you can still bake it

Can you not bake world or object coordinates into some sort of UVW mapping/channel in Maya, and then feed that into the procedural texture? That's how you'd work with procedurals on deforming objects in MAX at least. I haven't textured in Maya yet, so I don't know what tools are available there.
