Well, i think i'll come out of lurk mode now and comment on this wonderfull piece. Not to diss the efforts of others in this competition, but this was one of few pieces i saw that were not compositionally cluttered, and provided a wonderfull journey for the eye to travel, its remarkably soothing :P, HAH! odd for a space battle really.

I think there is an amazing cinematic appeal to the explosion on the structure in the distance, Non too smokey just the right amount of flame. Very "I.L.M" if you know what i mean.

anyways Congratulations on a great piece of art!

really good job. but i think is not proporcionally correct.

I mean, lets say that the witdh of this station is like 100 miles wide, in the horizon compare to the size of the earth, 100 miles means nothing, so the width of the station should be seen much less wider....

dont you think?

Hi Folks

I feel very honoured to see all of the posts in here.
Big thanks to everyone!! This is absolut awesome.

Strange...?! there was a post from a german member in here a few minutes ago, but it dissapeart?! (maybe he better wrote in english ;) nevermind... Thanks a lot ibb2004de

:: MuzzteinHi, Thank you 4 your quote, i knew what you mean... This was my main problem during this challenge, to figure out what looks good and realistic.
I modeled this for test in 3d and placed a cam into the scene.
If the ring is smaller it looks more realistic but... not so impressive, if the ring is bigger it looks great but very unrealistic.
I think i found a way thatit looks not too unrealistic ;)
This screenshot was done during my first experiments with the Ring.

Thanks a lot

It's really an awesome work! Congratulations!

Perspective is always a problem, not only in 3D, but in drawing, painting, etc.
But when we look at your scene it's impressive, and that's what really counts.

Since I am 3D student (forever *laughs*), I'm curious about something: did you tried out different camera lens or camera efffects on Max to see what results could be achieved from your scene? If so I'd be glad to hear about.

Thanks and once more congratz !

Forgive me, for myself and what I am going to write really don't mean
to hurt anyone's feelings, especially the winner's. I didn't follow the
whole challenge at all, and I am no professional, it's just what I want
to say.
I recall the instructions of the challenge : "capture an epic scale -
a pivotal element of a vast galactic civilisation or conflict" and the
title "Grand Space Opera". It sounds majectic, vast, not seizable in
the first moment because of it's tragedy and importance, scale of
legends - and what Im looking at looks rather like a fill scene in
a movie. The city reminds me permanently of Coruscant. It's just
not very - imaginative. Rather common space themes put together and
a bit much empty space, which is necessary for this sort of arrangement.
The big asteroid looks like he's going to crash into the ring. The Proxi-
mide spaceship on the left front seems to cause the explosion at the
other and of the ring by a perspectively weird looking green beam.
It's really professional work, the lighting, awesome details and the
impressive arrangement. But as a very good standard space image it
doesn't to justice to the otherwise underrated imagination's of a
Grand Space Opera caught in one image.

I didn't mean to harm anyone. Could be that the magnificence of the piece
startled me so much that I now can't think of the time when it didn't exist yet
and therefore act as if the standard of this image would be quite ordinary.
I like it nevertheless. Great work *confused*.

Congrats, Landsmann! ;)

I think it looks very impressive, the details, the perspective, the planet, space, etc. great job, man!

But I have one problem with the arrangement of the whole scene. Maybe there's too much in the foreground, think I would found it more "grand" if the asteroids and one of the ships weren't there.
In my opinion, for a great space picture, there must be left very much space and only few materia, so that the tension between the planets and the space or the more distant planets/sun becomes more intensive.

For now, my eye jumps back and forth between the two ships, the asteroids and the space station in the middle. I can hardly catch it as a whole picture. But maybe thats only my perception

The other critic is, that the scene looks pretty realistic and "normal", as said from someone before me. It looks like a typical science-fiction Hollywood movie-scene. I wouldn't say this makes the picture worse, but thats only my opinion, I myself like art the best when you brake the rules. =) But maybe that's not the point in this contest.

Please don't take this post too serious, I am pretty far from your calibre. So this is only what I feel about it, I am no professional.

anyways, keep up the good work!

Hi Folks.

Thanks 4 the AWESOME feedback in my both threads about the GSO-Challenge.
I feel very honoured about this. and I try to keep no questions unanswered!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hi, Irratio

Thankīs 4 your feedback, and nice to see that you nevertheless like my pic :)

I never thought this would be one of the winning pictures.
It was my first Challenge and i tried to make it as good as possible.

The cool thing is that this forum calls people from the whole world to share their work with each other, to comment it and to gife feedback. Thatīs the point where you get better. if you got only positive feedback.. you stand still. but if you got critic you can try to make things better.

nevermind... I love every kind of feedback.

Thanks & Stay tuned
Alex

That's a good point, which I've almost completely forgotten: sharing on both sides. If the art
work I have in mind would be exposed here, too, I'd gain much more than from just doing
critics, and I think my comments would improve. So let me make a promise that youll have
the opportunity to take revenge by the next months :arteest:.

hi - absolutely beautiful, dude.

One minor note. The perspective of the large space structure doesn't seem to quite shrink enough as it dissapears behind the planet. i.e. vanishing point etc.

Otherwise brilliant. lovely design on all the ships and structure.

I am very impressed with the imagination and artistic flair that you impressed into this work, it is quite the piece! While this picture does give you a good impression of space opera as a theme, it also allows a greater conceptual image for the future: humanity as it has always been, but even so surviving and exceeding self imposed and limited world views. It is a grand picture worthy of reward, it begs the creation of a multimedia novel or other medium that could expand and tell the story of this image you created.
On another note, do you plan on offering in electronic format a higher resolution copy of your art? As an overall picture it looks fine at a lower resolution like it is as I have found it, but you can't appreciate the finer details, only get hints of what those details are. Failing that, a large print that could be purchased and framed, this is the kind of art that appeals to me for my home. Thank you for your impressive artwork.

...I am quite very sure I posted in this thread earlier, very sure indeed...heh anyway, setting aside this most mysterious happenening....I must say this is one fantastic piece of cg. It's this picture, and another from this site that I look at most for inspiration and visions when writing, yes it is very amazing, I must know how to make such things.

Though, one little minor thing. Yes it is very minor, or perhaps not if you look at in a wider concept, yes, indeed anyway. But I feel, and I do not condemn anything or anyone, but in my opinion the picture is great and the art is great, but the story behind is lacking a little. Indeed minor I say when compared the beauty of it all, but I would think that a great story and backdrop is essential for good storytelling, however you did win and that is very great. However, the the story doesent seem to give the huge and climatic sense of greatness, that the picture depicts, if by itself the story was it woudlnt have been extra-ordinary, the picture by itself is extraordinary and the story just adds to that.

However, in either case you won a prize! A prize you won indeed and so all is good. I cant wait to see more of your work. Yes indeed I cant wait untill I can do some, oh tis all very exciting these day dont you think?

well anway keep doing the great work, yes keep doing them! ahah Ciao.

i'm trying to find a flaw in here... nope, i believe i can't. i usualy look for stuff other than space-stuff but this piece is exquisite. the explosion in the background - nice, subtle touch. nice atmosphere feel to the planet :applause:
