Hey everyone. Im having trouble converting my 3DS file into a blender file. I download the phython thing too. I click on the 3DS file and when i do it says...

Error:Unknown file type or Error , check console.

I click that off and it then says...

Error loading (My files location) Failed <invalid read error>

Can somone help me out here?

Hello dgenerationx4u

There is a python script at http://geocities.yahoo.com.br/landcf/3ds-0.7.zip and use it. It works perfect as long as there was no problem when the user saved the model.

I have posted some results on models I imported into Blender at http://www.blenderman.org/modules.php?name=Forums&file=viewtopic&t=502. My main working package is MAYA, not 3DS so I don't use the file format. But I did it so I can find a script that imports .3ds with no problem. I am the python admin at Blenderman that is why I undertook this task in the first place.

Open up Blender then split the 3D window into two sections, right and left. Change the left window to Test Window and keep the right window as the 3D view. In the Text window open up the python script and hit Alt+P and find the .3ds model you want to inport. Middle mouse click on the file and your model should show up in the 3D Window view port.
