My 3ds max 5 works, except when I render it doesn't show any animation. The correct viewport is being rendered. When I play the animation in the viewport it runs perfectly. Can anyone help me? Thanks.

Under Common Parameters in the render settings:
-Check virtual frame buffer
-Set the frames you wanted rendered in the time output
-Render Output, save it as the file type of your choice

-Read help file some, it will save you a lot of frustration

not sure what type of lighting you're using...
Try turning on Automatic Exposure Control, under
Rendering-->Environment...

If you use Skylight, you must use it.

There is no lighting in the scene whatsoever. When I play the animation in the viewport it runs perfectly. When I render it it renders all the frames without anything moving...

I think i had the same problem, where the animation would preview ok, in video post it would create the video but i could not play the finished file. go to www.discreet.com and go to the support and download section. look for a file called badavi.zip i think. This has a small registry tweak which i tried and now i can render no problems. Any problems email me

xilica, how about with previews? If you do a "Make Preview" do you get animation?

AHA!

..no idunno.. hm.

It could be a Windows thing, a corrupted codec or something to that effect.

Op, more questions from me: xilica, what happens if you render out to bitmaps? Render out the sequence to tga's or whatever, and let us know if they hold animation..

I'm asking this stuff in an attempt to shed some light on the symptoms. So far I'm still unsure if it is a MAX thing or perhaps a Windows thing.

Couple of issues here...

1. render your animation to a folder, as say .jpg's then loadthem into ramplayer, does it animate ok now?

2. You may be using Divx as your .avi codec, there was a bug with divx which meant that animations encoded with it would only show the first frame... Sound familiar? Also Divx will not compress to an image size that is not a multiple of 2, this can cause problems also.

In future, render to an image stream and compress when happy with the animation :)

Uhm, I hit the Auto Key button to animate. How do I animate. There is no animate button.

Sound like the way to animate..It seems like you're animating just fine, as long as things move in the viewport when you scrub the timer it's all good in that respect.

But do you get animation if you make a preview?

And what happens if you render the sequence out to individual bitmaps and load them back via the RAM Player?

Um, really, sorry to say this, but you know the bunch of books you got with max? Now may be the time to read them....
