CGTalk - material settings

Does any1 know if the is somewhere a tutorial or something with the setting for materials. like why and what material settings to use for wood, plastic, etc.

I would suggest reading the excellent turorials by Leigh in the Texturing section. While not specific to max they will help you understand how texturing works and some settings to experiment with.
