View Full Version : 2005 all-professional animation reel
yenvalmar 02-15-2005, 08:03 AM hee hee after 10 years as a professional 3d artist i finally have enough decent (imo) pro work to put together a strong 30 second reel of it. curious what everyone thinks.

umm its a divx avi, if that causes horrible convulsions i can post a .mov, or whatever the best avi codec is, i am unsure about web video.

personally i usually watch reels with the sound off :) i'm not really a sound person, i am open to suggestions on that. maybe i should just leave it silent? i thought the song was funny, but if it detracts from the reel i'd rather just leave it silent.

You have some really nice work on this real.
I have to completely agree with Obraxis about the music tho. I think it takes away impact from your work. Especially when the music just randomly changes.

Breakdancing aliens are always good.
I didn't mind the music, its just that part where it changed like a cd skipping that I didn't like.

Yes ! Kill the sound! it's absolutely too distracting and...not cool !
Try something less intrusive, like easy listening music, or no music at all would be better than this but most people find that a wisely chosen soundtrack helps carry a demo reel along nicely, just like icing on a cake.

ehh..10 years? well, it's a good demo reel. But for someone who has 10 years experience..

If your gonna add sound to your real I think you should edit it properly and choose something that will compliment your reel.

Wow for ten years! I guess for you it takes you to that level of real experience...sounds to me animation was a challenge for you at the beginning...Not bad not bad...
One thing though...the character doing that breakdance...looks as if he's going to fall on that slippery floor...hate to see the poor thing fall! And I don't have sound right now...but even without it...it's not necessary to have sound to have a great demo...
Keep up the good work...

I actually thought the music enhanced the video... it was a neat sort of artistic expression when it kind of scratches out for a bit and then back in again. I liked it. Fits with the way you cut the video.
And it looks like some pro work to me. But I do think that for 10 years experience, you must have more to show off than just 45 seconds. I mean, how do you get hired at different companies? I doubt you've only worked for one studio for 10 years.
Good work none the less.
Oh, and break dancin alien kicks ass. Definitely need to see more of that :P

well, i could have made a half hour long reel but i only wanted the stuff which i thought was my absolute best, which turned out to be only 45 seconds.. go figure. also, most of my work has been in realtime animation, i wanted this to be all rendered stuff. do people usually put together reels for realtime moves?
ps i'm glad _somebody_ liked the music!

The music was pretty rough to sit through.
But I really loved the animation.
The final scene, with the break-dancing alien. It was simply beautiful. The sound did actually seem to work for that part. However, there was just a moment when I felt that I'd lost a sense of its weight. When it hops to its feet and takes a few steps backward -- just before falling and spinning (about 32 sec into the real)-- it seemed a little too light on his feet, almost as if it was attached to a wire pulling it up-- then it seems heavier again, as it crouches down to leap into that final spin.

this is why i am not a sound designer! even back to my student films people complained about my crappy sound :/ the breakdance piece really needs some kind of beat, i originally animated it to the beat of a german hip hop song. if it wasnt for that i probably would have just left the reel silent. however, i havent come up with any music i like any better than this yet. sigh.
as far as the quantity of the work on the reel, all the advice i have ever gotten has been to only include the best stuff. i was trying to keep the reel under a minute, as when i am watching other peoples reels thats usually all i need to see. the oldest pieces on the reel is the breakdancing alien, which is from 2000, the furry critter and the race car scene were done in 2004. my rough of the reel was about 3 minutes, cutting this down to the length it is was really brutal, maybe i actually cut TOO MUCH but i am happy with all the work on it.
in addition to the quality bar i was tryin to set for work on this reel, most of my professional work has been (and currently is once more) doing realtime 3d assets. (my webpage has a fair bit.) i seem to find games work through contacts at this point and havent even needed a portfolio for my last couple game gigs. though by all means somebody hire me, then i will feel smart for bothering to make a web page and going out and promoting myself!
incidentally it may not be a suprise to read that i am one of those people who watches demo reels with the sound firmly OFF when i am reviewing animation candidates, so dont worry about offending my ears. unless there is lip synch, then i will watch with the sound on if it looks interesting enough to watch again.

i am glad you picked up on that, if you go to my website, there is another animation where he DOES slip on the slippy floor :)

those alien demon claws dont have much traction on the tile, that is his one weakness! you have to lure him inside, then you can get him. this is all part of the GAMEPLAY! well, that feature got cut so it wasnt used in the game, but i thought the slipping animation was cool so i made that little clip with it as a promo.
