to have your lights "on" while working with them. For instance, have your spotlight turned on in your perspective view so you can tell where pointing directly?

If you want to look through your spot light go to the panels menu in your camera view and select "look through selected" and you should be able to look through your spot light and position it the way you would a camera..

Also, if you press 7 on the keyboard it will show lighting in the viewports.

also, if you need it to be a more accurate representation of how the light is affecting your scene there is a new "high quality" option for the viewports in Maya 6. Also, why not use IPR for what you are needing?

thanks for all the repsonses. i know nothing of lighting as i started merely to learn how to model but not it's time to to rendering those models all your answers were very helpful. now time to crack open this gnomon video :D
