ivanisavich 02-14-2005, 09:01 PM Here's an animation I made with a friend's models.
Let me know what you think, and make sure to watch it with sound!

Yes, I love it was well :). The movement looks very natural, flows nicely. Those sounds fit perfectly as well.

Everything is perfect except one thing; isn't he aiming at birds? :) Or, maybe he's aiming at higher grounds, I don't know. He's really quick though. ;)

Well.....the character is actually from a short film Oliver Archer is making, where a couple of these characters are attacked by flying creatures....so I guess you could say birds ;)

Looks great, very cool.....and isn't it the cool factor that counts the most!!

Dude! awsome work! i love how "hyper" his movement is! i think thats the bigest flaw i see in animators work is the characters are running on keyframes too far apart and it all goes into an awkward slow motion.
anyways, Awsome work! :)

the 'hand held' camera is sick!
- way cool!
i like the hyper-ness of it all, but i wish i could see where his gun muzzle is pointing.
good job.
really nice animation!!! very very fluid!!:thumbsup:
i just donīt know if i like or not the motion blur... it seems like overlaped frames. it makes everything glow a bit. it works. but it gives everything a weird look. i think i like it tho.
how was it made?

The motion blur was a combination of default max image motion blur and "frame blending" in adobe premiere. I guess that's why you see it overlapping in some frames (I noticed that too when I first rendered it)...but it gives it kind of a surreal look so I left it.
but it gives it kind of a surreal look so I left it.
yes, exactly. its nice. :)

Short but tight and sweet without being flashy. The timing overall gives a good sense of the urgency the character is in. Nice!

Very nice animation. I'm sure you'd rather hear criticism than praise, so I'm going to nitpick a little. The roll is very linear, like a ball rolling, as opposed to a person in armor rolling. There's some crashing during the roll, particularly with his right leg in the ground, which becomes more noticeable when he finishes the roll and is on one knee.
I thought the motion blur looked a little strange, and when I went through it frame by frame it looked like a FPS disparity, like converting PAL to NTSC. I realize now you meant to go with that look, just make sure all the other scenes are done this way so it doesn't stick out.

I have seen the "Beasts within" film before and I was impressed. As a student just starting out I was very inspired. Keep it up!
(damnit, 3 more hours before I quit work for the day and get back to study :)

cool, that's a real action! i like the flip =)
maybe exaggerating the motion where he starts the bike? that'd add a little of urgency, he might be a bit stiff there
nice one man!

AMAZING!!
Okay, if we want, we could really find out all the nitpicking stuff in order to make your great animation 'perfect'. But you know what? The first impression I got from watching it was more than enough to make me go 'WOW', and to me, that's the most important thing :)
By the way, just out of curiosity, how long did you spend to make that animation?

Hey all!
I'm glad you like the anim! I also appreciate the criticisms/suggestions, but at this point I won't be going back and re-working it since it was mainly created as a test animation for the character models.
It took me about 4-5 hours to animate it if I remember correctly. Most of the time was spent trying to figure out a way for the biped's left hand to switch between 2 locked roots...and in the end I didn't have time to fully figure it out (although now that I look back I think I may have been able to solve the problem by creating more than one CS layer).
mr_wowtrousers: You saw "The Beast Within" eh? Haha...well the animation in there isn't the greatest (not to mention the poor compositing etc)....a ton of things I would go back and fix now that I've learned a lot more....but just wait until the short I'm workin on now is released and finished...it'll make "The Beast Within" seem like "The Girl Scout Within"! :D
Anyways...thanks again! I'm happy to see that this thread is still alive as more people watch the anim and comment.

Cheers mate. I was more thinking along the lines of being inspired that you achieved what you did on a budget. The whole thing was crap, I could barely keep the vomit down! ;)
Seriously, I am looking at doing a few things like this in the next few years. I think too many students don't stretch themselves and attempt a full story or mixing live action and 3D. Too many walk cycles and rendered teapots.

really nice motion flow! what was it rendered with?

It was rendered with Max scanline, and a few omnis.

I REALLY like this animation. Everything, like how you varied his steps and how you managed to give the hovercar a sense of inertia(something many professional games fail at) really make this a fantastic piece of work.

Definitely need to continue the story. As everyone else has said, its a very fluid animation.
Looked at your portfolio... your Nightmare model looks better without the skins. Definitely looks creepier with them, but they're too muddy and blended... I honestly prefer the detail you get with just plain colors.
And Machine Flesh looks better in the second more yellow render than it does in the top one.
Great work though.

Thanks once again for your replies! It's very encouraging to know that you enjoyed my animation :)
As for your comments on my Nightmare model TorQueMoD, I actually updated the texture...I just haven't yet added the new render to the wip section of my site...you can see the texture modifications here though:

Nice sound design, I'm actually a composer and sound effects designer, so I can't comment on the technical details of your animation.
I'm interested in the short that you're working on. It seems like you have a talented sound designer working on it already (or did you do the sound yourself?)
I've been looking for artists to work with for a long time. Do you still need someone for music or additional sound design on the larger project that this short is related to?
You can visit my website at www.straiusmusic.com (currently being updated) if you're interested in any additional audio contributions. I need to put sound to animations for my demo so I'm interested in collaborating with some talented artists.
Great work!

Hi Straius,
Nope...no sound designer working for me :P...I'm too poor to afford anything fancy like that so I do all of the sounds and music editing myself.
I prefer to do my own sound design when it comes to my projects, but I appreciate the offer of your help anyways :)

FANTASTIC!!
How on earth did you get to make it look so realistic!!!???
I love it when he gets on the bike and it kinda wobbles a bit and when he shoots and the cartridges fly out. I think this adds to the realism.
I also hear that you are making a short movie of this, when will this be out?
Well done!!!

You can feel the inertia as he kicks that hover bike into gear... Camera movements provide urgency to the situation. I want to see more. What does his voice sound like...

Hey all, it's great to still be reading all your comments after all this time! Thanks!
As for the alleged "film"...although it is true that a personal film of mine is in the works, this character/scene has nothing to do with it. The animation posted in this thread was simply a test I did for a friend of mine using his characters....there won't be anything more done with it...
