View Full Version : Just a little question
MartinNH 09-14-2002, 11:05 PM Hi everyone.
I just need to know if it is possible to for example draw a line in max, pull the viewport, and continue drawing the line without having to press the create button. Or to for example extrude an object and pull the viewport without going out of extrude mode. This is the way maya works, but is it possible in max? It would really increase the work flow.
Hope this made sense to anyone :D

when your drawing your line and you get to the end of the viewport just hit the I key. this will recenter the viewport around your current position and you can keep going with the line

Yes, you can do this in max. Just go to the pan, or rotate globaly thing in the botttom right corner and then go back to the screen, I am sure this should work. Some of them are quite confusing though.
If you have wheelmouse, it defaults to pan when you press it. It doesn't take you out of any mode you might be in. Rolling the wheel zooms in and out.
This is with version 4; I don't know if they changed the defaults with 5.

Thanks a lot for the quick replies. The I shortcut is very usefull :)
However, I still have a problem. If I work with polymodelling and I'm lets say, using the cut function to cut an edge all the way around the box. Now, I can only see two out of the four sides I'm going to cut in half, so I cut the two sides in half, and press the middle mouse button and alt to rotate the view and continue cutting. First thing max does now, is not to rotate the view, but to exit the cut I'm working on. Then I have to press the middle mouse button and alt again, and rotate the view so that I see the last two sides I need to cut. Now I have to possition the cut tool over the last vertex I cut, and finish my cut, so that I have a new edge going all around the box.
The smartest thing would be if I could rotate the view, let go of alt and middle mouse button, and instantly go back to the cut I was working on. Instead I have to first exit the current cut, then rotate, and then go back to the cut I was working on. Might sound like a small thing, but when you do it hundreds of times it starts to get annoying ;)
Maya lets you rotate the view without exiting the cut your working on. I wonder if theres a way to make max do the same?

Get meshtools: meshtools (http://www.s21net.com/meshtools/) then you can select the edge you want to cut a perpendicular edge through & just hit connect. Never have to worry about rotating the viewport or cutting the wrong face etc. Have a read of the 'brief documentation' which will show you some applications of the tools. Once you've used those, you never look back.
