View Full Version : Fast Lighting Setup...
TheCelt 02-14-2005, 06:50 PM Hi All,
I'm an Animator using Maya. Does anyone have any examples/tutorials/links as in how to set up a general lighting scene with 1-3 characters in a medium shot. I've seen some GI examples on the net but they are so slow to render.
Any suggestions?
Thanks,
- Somhairle

that was the first place I looked....hence I found cgtalk.
I mean is there any recomended tutorials that fellow artists use? As I'm an animator and I want to get some demos finished ASAP. and not spend valuable time on lighting issues, sabes?

My (http://www.andrew-whitehurst.net/3point.html) tutorial on 3 point lighting.
Jeremy Birn's (http://www.3drender.com/light/3point.html) 3 point lighting tutorial.
Those should get you started.
Good luck.

As you're an animator and don't want to waster time lighting, I wouldn't do any lighting at all, just do a playblast.
Since you want people to concentrate on your animation, it's much better to have no lighting at all than a rushed attempt that might detract from your animation skills.

Or you could get down and dirty and stress everything with lighting, it ads a lot of mood. And who's to say that the one viewing your stuff knows the difference between good lightin and good animation. I'd god theatre style, spot on main character and suggestions with volumetrics. Nice glossy reflections onthe ground and...doh...no overly complex stuff maybe!
