Fantastic, the two I chose as my number One and number Two 3D entries actually got First and Second place. I hadn't even looked at the 2D entries but boy... some impressive stuff. I'd actually say I'm more impressed with some of the 2D work. Congratulations to all involved, there were some great entries and the winning work is of surpassing quality.

Some really excellent results, and a very well done too all the entrants.

What I would have liked in the article is perhaps the judges having a little writeup of their personal favorite pieces, and why they chose certain pieces.

The 2d winners sure deserve the title but the 3D guys...I dunno, there's a big difference. Anyway it's much much harder to do it in 3D then 2D.

Congratulations to all winners!

My only comment is that (after looking at 2D and 3D entires) there is little to no point in using 3D for such illustration work. 2D wins hands down.

Congratulations to all winners, runner-ups, and honuorable mentions: you deserve to win, plain and simple. :)

Although participating in the Challenge was fun and a real "challenge", it has shown me 2 things about myself:
1. My work is not where I want it to be: I need to get better, become a better artist.
2. Seeing the entries for the 2D Challenge has really brought back my desire to work in 2D CG (not that I plan on giving up 3D work - I just plan on getting better at both).

Till the next Challenge everyone.

So much great imagery and skill on display it makes your head spin.

As a participant of the 2D competition I had the pleasure to work alongside all of these great artists and, while I'm a little surprised that some pieces were left out of the final results you cannot argue with any of the winners. I figured there were at least 30 stunning works in the 2D competition alone so Kudos to everyone and great work by the judges! What a tough job you had!

I think the 1st -> 6th place finishers show a great range of style, interpretation and sensibility. A wonderful comment on the breadth of talent throughout the competition.

Again, congrats all!

See you next challenge...

Thanks agian to CGTalk for such a wonderful event!

I keep thinking of a scene from the film "The Commitments" -- the band, all hardscrabble Irish youths playing soul music, has split up and they're mad at each other for one reason or another. Joey "the Lips" tries to console Jimmy, saying (something like):

"Sure, we could have cut a record and sold a million copies, but that would have been predictable. You've given them a great gift, Jimmy. You've raised their expectations of themselves."

I've never worked on a piece for 3 months before and learned a lot in the process. Thanks to CGNetworks for organizing the competition and congrats to the winners (amazing job!) and to everybody who learned something new from participating. :applause:

Congradulations to all the winners. Thanks to everyone who supported those of us whom put 3 months of B+S+T, into this competion. I have learned alot about my abilities and through watching this competion alot about public eye. The list I expected to be was quite different than the one posted and actually what really surprised me was one of the images which was repeditely laughed at irl made it in. But then again, south park is popular... Everyone has such unique visions of what GSO stands for and these deserve some attention. Thanks for the fantastic adventure and I will see you all next time.

Yeah lots of good art.

However the wide ranging and subjective quality of the winners and the actual amount of finished pieces is of far greater interest. To myself it speaks volumes about the 'real' difference between 3d and 2d art and not surprisingly is reflected in the winning choices.

every image link on the right of the article (press release) goes to a larger version except for the winning image which is linked to what is essentially an advert. Is this not a technique reserved for porn and spam websites?

Krugar -- there are absolutely no links to adverts on the article that I know of. I've double checked and all the images link directly to the corresponding entry pages.

1. What link is it pointing you to?

2. Does it look suspicious? i.e. is it pointing to something totally unrelated to CG?

Please follow up. CGNetworks clearly separates advertising from editorial and we do not use "techniques reserved for porn and spam websites". Kindly assist us.

Much appreciated.

Got it. That is supposed to be the book cover for the Grand Space Opera, and it links to the Ballistic Publishing page. It was intentionally laid out like that and I can appreciate the misunderstanding that it is some subversive form of advertising (which it was not intended to be).

I will get Bonnie Kain to redesign it such that it is clearer! This will happen as soon as we get into the office this morning.

Thank you,

Leonard: There was talk a while back (I think Mibus said something about it) that the editors of GSO Challenge book would be selecting a few other entries to be in the book along with the Winners and Honourable Mentions. Have they already decided on who else will be appearing in the book or are the still deciding on that?

ArtisticVisions -- Full production of the GSO book got underway last week with the gallery design. We've included all of the Honorable Mentions (HMs) in the gallery, but because there was so much great work in the Challenge we selected additional entries for the book.

A total of 17 HMs were awarded in the 2D and 3D categories. We've added another 35 entries to bring the total entries in the gallery to 52. Rest assured we will acknowledge which entries were awarded HMs in the book to maintain the "kudos-status-quo".

As soon as the layout design of the gallery is locked down, I'll contact the 35 artists to let them know they're in the book. In about 2 weeks the book will be complete, so we will do the official launch and post the thumbnails of the entire book on the Ballistic Publishing (http://www.ballisticpublishing.com) site.

In the meantime, if you've got any book-related questions, eg "did I get in?" send them through to me (daniel#at#ballisticmedia.net).

Kudos to the winners, runners-up and HMs. Your outstanding work makes my job easier and more enjoyable!
