View Full Version : Tabletop scene
knight42 09-14-2002, 06:39 PM This is a scene I originally did in Truespace a couple of years ago, redone in C4D7 ART.

The parchment is just a placeholder for now, and I have to rephotograph the attic stairs at work for the table top as the texture is a bit lo-res. Comments welcome...

:D
How do you plan on making the parchment fit into the scene? It's otherwise very photoreal.
Too, now that I finally understand MIP, eve low resolution textures for the table top should be effective, no? I would assume you'd be able to use Colorizer with the texture in the bump channel in order to get a very effective surface.

The full scene has a quill pen in it, with the blue thing being an ink pot. The parchment will end up being just a folded up bit of paper.
Sadly, I don't know what MIP is (its not a movie called Men In Purple, is it? :) ), and I'd have to look at Colorizer. The tabletop texture is just a bit fuzzy, but I have a higher res camera now, so I planned to do a new photo, and adjust it to make it a bump map - will colorizer help with that?
MIP is sampling type for textures.
Not sure where that would be in the ART manual, but in the XL7 manual it is in chapter 18 under the Materials Manager: Sampling

So far it's quite nice. There are a few facets showing in the knife blade, so I'd subdivide it once or twice. The inkpot looks a little too opaque, too.

looks pretty nice man! things i don't like are the candle flame and the black background. maybe simply put a blurred out photo in the background.

Thanks guys! I've uploaded an update. I added an envelope this morning, which needs a bit of work- it doesn't seem to sit to well there, I can see an extra shadow up the top-left edge, which i assume is caused by soft shadows.
Now I know what Fresnel is I've added it to the candle flame's transparency channel so the edges are a bit softer. I've also subdiv'ed the knife blade splines.
derwolpertinger: Youre right the black background is naff, I might be able to get a suitable photo from the same attic I got the table texture, as long as I move all the spare computer monitors first :)
Thanks Grey I've read up on MIP mapping now, and the Colorizer shader is now applied to the table's bump channel.

Jimbok aka Knight42 and I spent the morning in chat figuring solutions for his map... (as I didn't complete the model for the workshop.
Here's how far I got with it:
