hey guys,

I'm modelling this droid in the picture (I'm using Max 5). I need to know how to set up the neck for animation. How can I set the cylinders of the neck to make them rotate correctly? I mean, if the head moves, the first cylinder should rotate of a X value, the second of X/2, the third of X/3 etc. Should I use expressions? If so, can anyone help me to write the correct one for this task? Or maybe is there a kind of controller to do that without expression?

tnx,

What about.. just.. your standard ordinary IK solver? Or Spline-IK, if you're feeling advanced..

Hit up a few of the tuts from the tutorial manual to get acquainted with it all if needs be.

As far as I can tell that's what I'd try first.

mmm...with all those powerful tools...one forgets the simply but useful things :p

anyway, I was looking for a controller or something, 'cause I hate bones, and 'cause I've seen a tutorial where a EulerXYZ rotation controller was assigned to several object, adding some value (ex., +2) to the second object till the last, and the "chain" worked just good for what is my purpose. Anyway, I'll try some IK and let you know if I get the result I'm looking for.

tnx,

Sure you can MAXScript what you mention there no problem (although, a word of caution, I tried that once with a spine for a character and it completly fux0red the viewport update rate, I ended up using IK instead)

Don't hate bones though, they're your friends and will serve you well. With IK you can control where the head looks at by a simple end-effector, if you do it with the MAX script and such you'll end up with.. a very different way of handling that. You could set up a tail like that I guess, that could work, as those usually just needs to swing around a bit. Usually heads needs to be pointed at something specific though, and for that I can only recommend IK :)

Check out the IK Spline thing of MAX5 too, it's probably of limited use for a neck, but it's pretty darned handy for a spine, or any of such long chains of bones.

Best of luck.
