so tarot is like fortune telling cards or ?
Here's some inspiration from the Eatpoo community. (http://tarot.eatpoo.com/)
There's lots of interesting cards in there, but some liberties were taken with the common depiction of each card.

I think I stopped this one a little too late :/ Nearly two hours. Man, I was having so much fun with the dress, just doing little squiggles (I've never painted a dress like that), that I completely forgot about the time. Drat. For me, this is still very much though a sketch. The format is so much smaller than what I'd usually work in, it's not at all polished like my stuff usually is... I'm seriously considering going ahead and making an actual painting of this though :]
It's been ages since I knew what the tarot cards mean - but this is Queen of Pentacles, anyway, I might do another one and make it looser and more sketchy (am learning so much from sketching this much :D

amazing as always Enayla. Could you give us a bit of insight into how you work? 2 hours for something like that is amazing, same with all of your sketches.

Enayla - wow girl, your painting are crazy good. The last one I saw your 10 minute hepurn I was like no way 10 minutes! It would be great if you could share how you do it, because ur work is amazing, I checked out your website to see your finished works and it all looked so beautiful,
lol the daily sketch group becomes more intimidating every day, I remember at first there were only a few master painters and then well everyone else was trying now, things have really gone the other way!
I still love it here thought, even though I took a month break from the sketch group it made me get better and the daily practice is fantastic.... so despite intimidation I will keep on sketching.

Thanks :]
In an uninspired state, this would've taken quite a few hours, but when I'm feeling like painting, it's really quick. Here, I started out with a colour sketch as usual, went over it with a smaller brush and picked out details and then used the smudge tool to get the nice overlaps of colours (and not ashamed of it: smudge can be your best friend, just use it sparingly. And, not a round one - make a semi-round brush that's sorta blotchy and uneven and not compact, it gets a really nice, quick result that doesn't look smudgey.)
Then I squiggle. I use the soft edged round brush for some of it, the sharp edged one for some other things. I vary between pressure sensitivity on opacity and on size, and sometimes I use my favourite sketch brush: one that's slightly soft edged and set to pressure sensitivity on both.
If I make an actual painting, I work in SUCH a large format that this process takes forever, working small like this (I only shrunk the picture slightly for the thread), it's quick and you're just picking up the highlights from the darker tones. It's not as detailed as it looks - here, I uploaded a closeup of her face for you:
http://www.furiae.com/images/tarotcloseup.jpg
See? Squiggles :] She looks awful that close up (also, I accidentally didn't save the final version, so this one is from a slightly earlier stage :[ the colours are a little different, I think?), but the highlights are sort of in the right place so they create an illusion of a more detailed face. Also, helps to pull the mirror into the living room and put on a pretty dress - then stand up and look at self whenever I get confused with the pose, ha ha. Procedure of putting on dress not included in final time account of how long it took.
I hope that helped a little?

Okay, heh, I've now decided to share one of my trade secrets with you guys - but only if you promise to do a tarot-inspired painting!
Here's my smudge brush. Use it sparingly and only when the smudging can't actually be spotted :}

O, hush :] I'm the one that should thank you guys. This little section of CGtalk has me so inspired that I'm painting with eagerness for the first time in ages. So many lovely pictures to look at, the whole 'theme' thing is really awesome: seeing a ton of interpretations of the same thing.
And I feel so welcome, too <3

Enayla: You are too good for us! But stick around so we can learn from you! Thanks for sharing your secret smudge brush. Perfect timing too, I'll have to try it out since I've recently been messin' around with the brush creator in Photoshop.
Here's mine. Didn't have much time, so I did a pretty quick sketch. For me that's anything under an hour. I usually sit, think, sketch, change things around, sketch, stare, sketch, I do a lot thinking about composition, trying to create a comp that leads the viewers eye to the parts I want people to look at.
Anyway here it is. Photoshop, 45 minutes.
EDIT: My Bandwith exceeded. Just uploaded this image to a new host.

Argh, took me too long for a sketch :( First i had it in OpenCanvas but i couldnt find the shortcuts easily so i exported it to familiar Photoshoppie. And struggled with color tones even with looking to a reference! Say 4 hours maybe more... I can be so clumpsy sometimes but heck it was fun.
Enayla, thanks for sharing one of your secrets (gorgeous pic by the way). I will try that trick out for sure. Its only a bit late for my tarot thingy but i hope it is still worthy enough to place.

WOW!! This is an awesome topic! I loved the series Carnivale which had some great tarot cards designs. The sheer variety of the cards - makes it so hard to choose one to work on. And Kirt the link you provided is informative and inspirational (not to mention the artworks there are just incredibly intimidating). And Enayla has already outshone us all! Thanx for the great tips!
I'm reading through all the different cards and interpretation and getting some ideas down. We'll see what comes out of it. Boy I so want to do this one. I'm so stoked!

Wow, Enayla! I'm thinking maybe we should set up your account so that everything you post automatically goes into the 'CG choice' forum. I mean, really! How long does it take you to finish one of your more 'polished' pieces?
and WHERE did you learn to paint like that??
Well........here's my fortune teller. hope you like it! C & c gladly recieved.

Yay! Am so loving the contributions so far. Awesome interpretations. Let me see more :D
I once learned the entire tarot card deck when I was younger, not because I actually believed in it but because I thought it was neat. I had a couple of decks - I thought they were so pretty. Honestly considering designing a deck but it feels a little false, as I'm not a 'believer', as such.
Anyway, I shan't turn this thread into a tutorial thread or anything, but since I was asked about the smudge, as such, I'll post this little thing I threw together, I hope it's a bit helpful :]
http://www.furiae.com/images/smoothing.jpg
(something I forgot to say is also this: see that line with the smudging on only one side? I was trying to illustrate that you can still keep sharp edges, and that you should. Often, where a shadow is beneat an arm against the skin, for instance, there will be a sharp edge with smoothness above and below. It's dangerous to just have everything looking blurred).

First of all - Enayla, your sketch is beautiful and thanks for sharing your knowledge here. Your work is very inspiring (Am I the 100th person to say that now?) :)
Anyway, I really know nothing about Tarot Cards aside from the fact that I've always loved looking at them. And I really don't usually work this dark, but this is where the topic took me.

Blew you away, wow, Thanks man. I think I'm seeing it too. My favorite art are those that look energized. My work use to look really flat and posed, for lack of a better word. However, since I've been sketching here at CGtalk, and with my studies at art school about line of actions and quick guesture like drawings, I am starting to see improvements. My images seem a little more dynamic now. My favorite digital artist is Craig Mullins. His stuff blows me away.

Thanks so much for the tips/insights you have posted to this thread! I just managed to get to this thread (I always run a little late), but I am going to review all of it!
Also, helps to pull the mirror into the living room and put on a pretty dress - then stand up and look at self whenever I get confused with the pose, ha ha.
In my case, I think I would become confused, looking at myself in the mirror while wearing a pretty dress :D

sorry, not realy an illustrated sketch. more like a digital composite sketch. but i had a painting by Bouguerough that i thought would be perfect for this....
anyway, i used photoshop. and about 30 minutes. 10 of that went to typing out the info on back that is probably all spelled wrong. :) just a bunch of filters and photoshop tricks. If i get any time to sit down ill replace this with a real sketch.

Hey people. Its been a while since ive had time to do this. Some spare time in school gave me the chance to put in a card. Really beutifull entries so far.
Friday love yours - I was wondering.. do you ever paint in zoomed view or do you paint it all in 100%?
Enayla, that is so crazy. Great sence of perspective in the pentagram too. And green-black gotta be my favorite gradient :)
Thany, holy cow! neat stuff. cool idea to let his weapon be the souce of the magic.

amazing entries!! the level here is really going up every day!
well, this one may be a bit near the off-topic-ness, but I've seen that there is a tarot card that is a tower being hit by lighting, and...I wanted to paint this...
I actually saw this on live this saturday night, here in madrid, so I'm painting from memory... one of the highest buildings in the city (104meters, 32 floors) got on fire, and as it was during saturday and at night (between 23:30 and 4:00am or so), there wasn't anybody there, so there's nobody dead and only some firemen breath some smoke... knowing that, it was a great spectacle, something dreadfully beautiful, and people (like me) were on the streets watching it, (maybe taking a drink:)), discussing if it would collapse or not, taking photographs... at the end only the upper part of the outer walls fell down, it's still standing there (for the moment) and causing heavy circulation problems in madrid...

I'm no expert but i know that Parrish did make great use of the profile, so i can see the link...He was known for his blues...maybe Art2 will be known for the warm colours that he uses so well :)

Hi everyone!
This topic moved me, so i'm going to post (as usual) a late entry!
The joker:
Free from constraints, he can do anything... and he might!
I had to objectives for this sketch:
1 - To try a new perspective
2 - To give it a twisted expression

What do you guys think?
Here's what i think of yours:
@Enayla (you must be getting sick of recieving only compliments... or maybe not!) so i'll try to provide some constructive criticism AND my heartfelt "WOW THAT'S AMAZING!" :P
The claws on your queen seem a little to straight for my liking (claws are usually partially bent inward towards the palm in most animals), but it's really nothing.
The glowing pentacle and fade-out effect is my favorite part of your sketch, it really looks wd!
Finally, i'd like to thank you for your smudge tutorial! I used it a little in my sketch, try to spot where!
@bkboogy I tend to skip your piece as i sift through the posts because of the desaturated colors, but when i took the time to look at it, i really see the emotion conveyed... Very effective!
Also, the reflection in the water is really wd! But it's easy to miss, once again, because of the lack of color... Good job in all, because the emotion is the most important part of a painting
@Thany Heh, that's a really nice piece you have there. I especially like the death character. To improve, i'd consider another pose for the deathee... perhaps is chest could be slightly raised as if he's convulsing... This would, other than making the picture more 3 dimentionnal, mix things up a bit...
@Fridayeve Nice sketch! Still pumping out masterpieces too, huh? Well, keep it up, my only crit would be that the nose is a little bit crooked... though it might be intended, still it's phenomenal!
@HammyW Wow! I really like your piece! Not only is the style original and eye catching, and the character is really cute, but you really pulled it off too! LOL! i just noticed the moon attatched to the cat's tail! :P awesome!
@Kirt I also really like your sketch! It's Stylish and despite not being colored, it oozes style! The angel on the right's face is hard to make out though, but the piece as a whole is amazing!
@Everyone else GJ on this topic! Everyone really surpassed themselves
AND NOW!!!.... ... Back to lurking!
Till next time, folks,

Way way way past the deadline (and the voting for that matter) for this one... but I had to throw this up here.
My friends and I were inspired by the intro sequence to HBO's "Carnivale" (http://www.hbo.com/carnivale/) so we decided to design our own Tarot deck. This was a quick collage exercise in Photoshop to work out the design I wanted. I will be completely re-drawing it by hand, monochromatic (we decided the whole deck would be b/w.)
It is the Ace of Pentacles. (~3 hours Photoshop+Google Image search; Wacom Tablet)

I have been so bummed lately that I haven't been able to participate in the sketches... I have been doing a major redesign on my portfolio website, travelling, and working a lot so maybe I can get back into it in the coming weeks when stuff settles down.
Keep up the great work, everyone!
