View Full Version : Maya performance problems
fjskmdl 09-14-2002, 02:55 PM Hi, i get the next problem very often:
When hiding/showing the channel box, or switching from 4 viewports to 1, everything slows down alot. when i want to orbit it get like 3 fps instead of 100+ (slowdown occurs with nothing in the scene too)
when i switch to 4 viewports again, orbiting / zooming , ... is fast again...
I'm using win2K and service pack 3, got a Athlon 500,384 SDRam, Geforce 1 32MB DDR
Before, i had acceptable performance, so don't tell the PC is too slow plz :p
I just installed the maya qualified nvidia drivers 29.80, but that didn't help either.... please advise
:)

some extra info: when using 4 viewports, and resizing one of the for very big (almost as big as fullscreen), performance stays acceptable. (so it's obviously not the PC performance)
When choosing another layout, like outliner / persp, everything is ok again....
:annoyed:

thank you, i just soft-quadro-ed my geforce, started maya and it hasn't slowed down since then... hope it stays like this.
I just have to ask, did you Soft-Quadro the drivers, or did you use the RivaTuner application?
If you're still using Soft-Quadro, I'd suggest you to download Rivatuner.

I used riva tuner ( http://guru3d.com/rivatuner )
In my system devices & sisoft sandra 2002 it says "NVIDIA Quadro" so i guess it works :)
Ok, well I hope it stays like that for now fjskmdl :)
Glad you got it working.
And sorry wgeddes, but I don't think there's any tricks for Radeon :hmm:
That's my main reason for supporting GeForce cards, you can't modify Radeons

there is a hacked driverset for the Radeon 8500 that turns it into a FireGL card ... can't find the URL atm but if you do a search in the Rage3d.com forums, it should be in there
edit: oh you do lose D3D functionality with that set though, but it'll run pro 3d apps better (from what I've read, I haven't personally tried it)
Oh? Interesting... How come no one has told me this earlier?!? :)

not many people know about it, other than the ones that checked the forums daily when the thread was going on. Most of the users there are gamers and didn't pay much attention to that driverset.
