What is a good method to realistically light an olympic (sports) stadium (daytime)? I've used HDR before and would like to incorporate it here, but just not getting the sort of results I'm looking for...
greatful for any tips.... could be methods you have used to light any large open architectural structure.

many thanks!

Well an olympic stadium event taking place during the day? Hmm use HDRI, no really, are you using the right image (HDRI) files? Or the right materials on the geometry. You can emulate it by using fake GI simulations, but see this http://www.debevec.org/ , here is the parthenon lit using HDRI IBL .

can you point to any tutorials on how to get this effect? Iv'e been using HDR to composite items realistically into specific video backgrounds but not for lighting a latge structure and I must be doing something wrong or missing something.....

If you have a sun lighting your scene, use a directional light with raytraced shadows. When you fix that, add a giant sphere with a surface shader tinted with a blue and make is not casting shadows, than enable Final Gathering. Render with Mental Ray. This is the basic steps. If you're looking for a tut just make a search about how to use FG.
Good luck.

Yes, The issue (well not a real issue, just wondering) when I use the normal way Iv'e done so far - creating some shpere around my scene and mapping an hdr image to it - to light my scene, I run into a problem with the stadium because it has elevated areas on all sides which decrease the amount of light that reaches the inside part - in an unnatural kind of way. An open structure doesn't present this problem. Anyways - I guesss Ill try all the variables available in the mental ray's IBL node which is new to me and seems to be a more advanced way of doing what I have done to this point.
