CGTalk - [WIP] Landscape

It's my first try in digital painting. Up to now I only did some loose sketches with pen and paper (most technical), and repainted/colored only few of them in Illustrator/Photoshop.

For this first try I'm working on a single source lighting plus some ambient, no hard shadows. The sky will be removed later, it doesn't explain this kind of light.
I'ts planned as a landscape of a fantasy planet with some strange geological shapes, so don't wonder about that. Overall Composition? Uh, had enough to do with the rest of it ;) it's just a trainyard for me.

Still many details missing and the village is just a sketch. But I'd like to know if I'm on the right way and if you can see some typical beginner problems I should eliminate as soon as possible. So any comment will help me a lot!

Pretty scene, it reminds me of some of what I saw on Tatooine in star wars galaxies mmorpg.

I'd like to see the same nice detail that I see on the right side of the chasm over on the left side.

still have to fix some details and the sky.
perhaps more depth by fading the background? Other things I should fix?
