View Full Version : Original 2D part for the Cyborg Concept minichallenge
jeroentje 08-29-2002, 11:12 PM Hi, all people of the 2D artwork forum,
I want to try to get some things happening here a bit, so starting with a Mini Challenge felt like a good idea.
This has nothing to do with the official cgtalk.com challenges at all BTW. It’s just for having some concept fun here. And as an attempt for some more collaborations between the cgtalkies.
What I have in mind is the following: when this thread is filled with all your awsome (2D concepts for) Cyborgs, I will move the thread to "Work In Progress 2D & 3D" and change the name to: "Moved from 2D artwork - Mini Challenge: 20 awsome Cyborgs, waiting to be modelled", or I'll post a new thread there with a link or something. And we will see what happens next :)
I expect every modeller to credit the one that did the concept offcourse. And when you want to model your own concept then, noone is stopping you.
Now here is the challenge:
- A Cyborg is half machine/robot and half biological. So the machine part cannot go without the biological part or the other way around.
- If someone thinks a Cyborg can only be half human, they might be right but who cares.
If you want to stick a small dog’s head to a lawnmower, as long as the lawnmower doesn’t mowe without the head, and the head falls dead without the lawnmower, it is a Cyborg.
- Just post your entrie in this thread.
- This is NOT a WIP challenge but a conceptchallenge.
- To prevent the posting of 20 updates and overrunning the work of others, try to limit your amount of WIPs
- Be creative and make it look fantastic.
- Rules are not open for negotiation. Resistance is futile (or however they spell that).
So the rules are simple, have fun and surprise us.
Jeroentje
P.S. We would appreciate it if you could host your piece from a server (there is a thread in "General Discussions" on free hosting places). When attatching is your only option: so be it.
UPDATE 3 Entering concepts ends at Friday 13 (just for good luck ;) ) Late in the evening in Central European Time

wow couldn't have gotten a better second moderator, taken action already i like that, my one question is regarding something you mentioened briefly about overtaking the other threads, is it possibel to have a small subthread then like the 2d one in the challenges??? this is a great idea overal, just thinking aobut 20 threadsfor this and peoples own artwork could make this lace a little crowded. But I like the idea as I often feel people con't notice us since we only suggest the third dimension but in two dimensions, makes us sorta like outcasts. [hate it when someone asks what type of cel shader I used on my classically animated film ;) ]
Of course considering my schedule I most likely won't join this first one, especially since I really like Art7's one a lot.. Hey whatcha think of the new avatar? hard to see the expression that small but basically its that "what did I step in" kinda feelin.
jeroentje
08-31-2002, 09:39 PM
Hi Kaiskai.
Nice new avatar, you could make him dance in an animated gif. What is it with you and mooses btw?
Thanks for the compliment.
To answer your question: there will be no 20 threads on this. All concepts will be posted in this exact thread. Just like there are about 30 pieces in the thread called "Speed painting?"
3D models will be posted in this thread aswell as soon as it gets moved to the WIP forum (have to make up a deadline yet, I will keep you informed). All 3D models will be posted in this exact (moved) thread.
Maybe (hopefully) the 1 thread itself will become a little crowdy. But that is what is agreed and that is how it will be.
Just 1 thread is to prevent a Frankenstein monster getting on the loose in the scenario you just described.
Keep in mind that this is just an experiment and I have no idea what will happen (maybe nothing, and we'll go and do something else  ).
Now enough of my blahdieblah; let's draw!

well I have a clip of him dancing for a test animation of the rig. The moose was originally for my Classical film but the idea changed, i liked the design so I modeled him in 3D. I have no time to model anything else right now so I am using him for testing and another tester is rigging him for vrious tester to play with.
Honestly I'll work on anything thats not a gorillaright about now.
I like the posting in this thread idea, will make one large thread but keep it from gettng in the way of other threeads good thinikn. Well can't wait to see what others do, I'll see what I can try to WIP up if I find a minute here or there.

There were two very cool looking cyborgs that got killed in the servercrash. Would be nice if the got reposted ;)

Because Until I get a real job I have nothing but time on my hands and I love stuff like this.
Good Idea jeroentje

Soooo, I did it as far as the conceptual stage, ala Craig Mullins (I thank him 1000 times a day!), rather rough, but about as finished as you'll get from me on Laborday Weekend
Thanks that was a great break from the many projects that are due this week, thanks again and I look forward to the next one.

@ Dmonk
I am not here to tell people what to model and what not to. But I for myself would not want to model something that someone else is allready doing. Seems pointless to me. Or you must feel like you can do it 10 times better
So try and use a bit of common sense on that.
This Across-the-Board Mini Challenge was started to encourage people to work together and to see what would happen when 2 people with different talents work on 1 project. So it makes sense to discuss what you will be modelling with the concept artist.

At the prodding of Wacom_Knight.....My early rough idea. This is the 1st sketch so it will change a bunch. Would like to come up with something more original than the wheel. Basically he is able to work while on his commute. Back to "not" laboring on Labor day weekend.

W_K - very ince Technique, looks ice and simple, good concept so far, thugh I find with his current anatomy the orange light/laser/scanner (whatever it is) to be in a rather uhhhm suggestive place, maybe this is where he plugs in to another cyborg???
Sleepless - LOL this is a good one, and definitely gets me thinking about trying to get at least something in, I tend to prefer funny over knights and cool swords and guns myself, so this one gets a thumbs up:thumbsup:
Hmmm no what can I do???
@jeroentje - I can see a reason to moel something someone else is, everyone does things differently and takes things different ways, of course I totally agree on getting beck to the designer and actually collaorating rather than just taking the pic and modeling, but I know my out come would still be totally different from mosteveryone else.
jeroentje
09-01-2002, 05:05 PM
@ Kaiskai
Than go ahead and do so. Like I said; I am not here to tell people what they should model or not. I am only asking them to keep their common sense and not show us 20 models of the same concept. And besides, I think it's a bit early for this discussion. We are just waiting for the concepts to roll in now.
Cheers

Here's my cyborg. The old ver. got lost in the server crash. (I hope I still get one update:D) It's still pretty messy, but I think it's coming along. I hope it meets everyone's standards.btw tell me if it's too big.
http://sv1.3dbuzz.com/Upload/i10447cyhugecolsm.jpg
Good start Cockofthewok, but it might be hard for a modeler to understand all the shapes of him in that stance.
Here's my entry. I was trying to think of an interesting way to combine man and machine, and I remembered a very old sketch I drew... could be 6-8 years old. It's always been one of my favourites, and the characters are perfect for a cyborg idea.
Here's a link to the old original scene called "PLiGhT of The SPiDER PEoPLE":
http://www.baconbomb.com/bluefunk/art/fant/fant31.jpg
It's a poor scan, and I'm not sure where the original is now, but you get the idea.
Here's the current concept:

much nicer, this one lI can get into, though the forshortening on the arm is akward, and the hand is lookin a little gimped, the design itself is kinda cool, I think it would be nice if something on it was more organic though.
Pleased to say I will be partaking in thi one, should have something in the week.
jeroentje
09-03-2002, 12:46 PM
Oh what the hell... here she is, it's been finished for days.
I tried to keep a bit of 1930/40's feeling in it and used oldfashioned switches and buttons. Texture should be brown leather like them old double winged flying machine pilots.
I overdid it a bit in the rendering maybe, but I loved the piece and lost myself in detailing. Not really necessairy for the challenge, but I thought maybe some nice info for a modeller.

Jeroentje.. your drawing is nice.. but I think she looks more using a suit than being a cyborg.

I'll use my "2nd allowed post" for a cleaner and colored version if I have time.
