This is a character model I'm working on. I don't have much experience with 3d yet, haven't done anything before this in years... Anyway, images first (modeled in Maya):

The full body view is the smooth proxy'd version of the model and is very much unfinished still. It's taking me a lot of time just keeping the mesh flows neat. The head is more finished, though the ears need tweaking as do the eyebrows. The biggest question I have at this point is this: I think I made a mistake when I disconnected the head from the lower-poly version I had started out with - now of course making morph targets for facial animation is not really sensible to do by moving vertices around. I'd like to animate this though, so is there any way to do that to a mesh with so many polys without tearing my hair out? Also any tips on mesh flow, edge loops etc. for the body with animation in mind would be appreciated.

Edited: forgot to mention app I used... Durr.

Hi rebuilder,

Sorry for taking so long to return the favour.

Had a look at your model and its looking good. The proportions are coming along well.

A few crits which you now doubt have picked up on yourself.

- The legs, if he is going to be wearing trousers then fine. If not then much more work needed (wip after all)
- Shoulders look good and the pecs lead nicely into the arms. Well done.
- Lobe of the ear...way to sharp and drooping and more detail is needed inside the ear.

All coming along well and good luck.

Good start, I second the comment on the ears, they also look a bit too far out. Usually ears sit right snug with the skull. The cheek bones might be a bit too big also. The distance from the bottom of the eyebrows to the upper eyelid is too far.

Looking good so far, but i would work a bit on the eyes, do a bit sharper outher corner, and i don't know if their position is right, compared to the eyebrows. As said before rounding out, and positioning the ear will also help to improwe the model. I also would raise the Pectoralis major muscle a little.

Thanks for the tips, especially the eyebrows were something I hadn't noticed before, they just vaguely felt too feminine to me. I think it'll help a lot to fix the distance issue.

The only thing that I can see that looks odd is the postion of the ears. I can remember in school being taught how to draw faces - looking at the front of the face, if you draw a horizontal line through the eyes, and another horizontal line across the base of the nose, you have the zone for the ears. The model ones probably look a little high. Other than that, it looks uncannily like someone I work with. Maybe you could name him Clive! Sorry I can't contribute any technical advice, but 3D character animation is something that's beyond my scope of understanding at the moment. BTW thanks for the reply to my gallery post.
