Hi gang,

Can anyone offer a way of making that kind of 'cloudy' writing effect you can get behind stunt planes when theyre flying around? Im not sure the best way to approach this - particles, fluids, textures etc. What would be the simplest way to get this effect? The animation isnt important, its the end effect so that it looks like realistic cloud writing.

For a kickoff I need to get the writing to spell out certain words (it has to be readable).

Any ideas?

Hi,

my idea would be..

since u r saying the realistic cloud effect is what u look for, u can do it in fluids, which gives u the crisp contrast required for cloud realism.

try having a 3d container, adjust the size, use an emiter, which will be animated (attached to the plane) and run the plane in the 3d container. So as ur plane moves, the emiter will emit density into the container. Create another 3d container , choose cloud puff preset for it.

Use this great tool (http://www.highend3d.com/maya/mel/?section=rendering#2553)which will transfer color, incand , opcatiy and environment ramps to ur target 3d container. So using this, transfer the required ramps on to ur container, delete the later. then adjust the shading till u r satisfied..

or if u prefer to use particles, u can have a look at this PETER SHIPKOV's tool (http://petershipkov.com/development/afterburn/afterburn.htm)which lets u use particles for the dynamics and uses fluids to shade them.. But u have to tweak till u get the desired look..

hope this helps..

which is the name of that "great tool"?

as usual the link to highend does not bring up the correct tool itself.

cheers

Hi alexx,,

i'm soory .. here it is :

Could it be done with particles and goals? (since Im not looking for this to be animated - I just want the single still image at the end). The I could create text objects to form the words (do curves work for goals? - if not I could construct non-renderable geom from them I suppose?) and get the particles to assume the position of the text? Once I have a render I could just do some PS trickery to get the trails between the words.

Does this sound viable? If so, can someone give me a quick 101 on goals. Ive never used them before - will it be tricky to control the effect or is that their whole purpose?

Cheers

that sounds like it would work. You could aslo do it in fluids the same way. make a container and use text curves to emit from them for a few frames. You can look at the settings for clouds on the presets in the visor and apply them to your container to get good looking clouds. I'm make it a high number of voxels to get the detail and a smoth emission. let it playa few frames to let the sim create the shapes.

hi cameo,

i agree with destruct007.. if u r looking for single frame render, text curve, in fluid container is the best bet....images/icons/icon13.gif

if u get some renders, pls share them here.... best of luck,

Ah right thanks guys, I've never looked at fluids before so didnt realise the possibilities with text for them. I have looked at some presets in the past and they do give very impressive realistic results.

I'll have a look at the docs this weekend and see what I can come up with. Or scour the net for a useful tut :)

Many thanks
