View Full Version : a very detailed creature hand
thats it
its time i'll finnaly make my own portfolio site.
i allready have an idea for it's design and it will involve an creature's hand (u'll see what i'll do with it when i'm done :) .
anyways here's the first shot of the wip, it looks similar to human hand but its not exactly ...
i'm modeling this from my only refference - my own hand. if u know of a really cool creature hand refference it might be helpfull too.

There's a small crease (right word?) at the wrist, which makes the hand look way too big, compared to the arm-part - or the arm-part might just be too small in general...
Nice hand though!
thnx for the feedback i'll look into it.
some more minor tweaks
i now see i gotta tweak the thumb and the wrist needs a tiny fix up
but after that i think i'll start skinning it.

last update before UVmapping/skinning.
now is really the time i could use some comments/anatomical issues (if there are any seriuse ones).

i think the hand looks a little flat on the inside of the palm , it lacks alot of the volume i would expect even for a creatures hand, also to sell the idea that its a creature some webbing in between the fingers might help it .

I stil think the wrist looks weird... Btw, how did you do that gold texture? I'm in dire need of one!

Nice start on this hand. I must say, the top view is great, the modeling shows a knowledge of anatomy as the underlying bone structure is nicely apparent. It makes the hand look more creepy, gaunt.
Because of this success, I would like to see some of that effect on the underside of the hand. Perhaps this is why the underside looks a little strange. We see the top the way it is and expect to see the same on the underside, and when it is not there, it looks particularly flat? Anyway, my 2 cents.

The back of the hand is looking really awesome, the underlying skeletal structure really shows.
The part of the palm under the pinky (I believe it's the "hypothenar eminence") looks really wide as compared to that of the thumb (thenar eminence), and just looks odd. The wrist is a little weird too. The bottom of the arm just kind of melts into the palm of the hand.
It's looking awesome though, I can't wait to see more =)
thnx for the comments
i'm now done with the modeling and got the model perfectly UVMAPPED with minimum seams as can be seen here -
http://artofgaming.net/temp/zhand8.jpg
and here's what i cant wait to start painting on -
http://artofgaming.net/temp/zhand8uvz.jpg
next would be skinning this and then the most important part - the texturing.
gave it a fast rig
i think it's good enough for what i need
http://artofgaming.net/temp/zhand9r.jpg
guess its texturing time, at last.
i'm close to finish the color map which i started working on today so i thought i'd post it here to ask what ya'll think.
note that i used same map as bump (meanning i will make a much better bump map later) so its really just about the color map now.
here's a render

and here's the color map for now (sorry for the big image)

Um did you miss the post where it was said the hands were too flat? Cause they are vehemently unproportional, the arm part is alright, and this is a "monster" arm. However, the fingers are too large for that hand when looking from the side view.
I might be wrong though, i usually am. Anyway i just love the texturing you made, its amazing. Beautiful clean render as well.

it looks cool, and the hands don't look to unproportionate... but then again, I have pretty big hands... :) anyways the textures sold it for me... this looks fantastic...
thanx for the comments
the hand is now 100% finished as can be seen here

anyways, i am now working on the intro image for my new site. this is how it'll look. i cant put my finger on what i dont like in this image -

overall, textures look good, but modeling is wrong, once again I also say that the inside of the palm is too flat. Also the palm is too short, in other words, your fingers start too early. Thats why someone refered to your fingers being to long. To make it look creep I would make the palm "longer" than usual not shorter. It just looks weird, almost like your thumb is too long but actually its not. Your palm should end at about where you have the ring. IMO

Wow I must say when I first saw this thread I didnt think anything of it but now that I see the textures and the composite Im very VERY impressed. The glow around the fingers mainly the thumb and pinky seems very odd. Also what is the hand coming out of? my first instinct was that it was a computer or television monitor seeing how its gaming. Keep up the amazing artwork.

your last backlit render of the hand with no hairs is more creapy than the one with hairs - reminds me of the alien from signs (especially the tonality).

I must say, I agree with Spiro and mihkeltt, but overall, the texturing is great.
Also, if Crackjoe is right, and the hand's s'posed to come out of some monitor; The edges are way too soft - they don't look sharp at all.
(although a monitor wasn't my first guess.)
I'd still like to know how you did the gold texture...
hi, sorry for bother u. :) i am a new user here. and i dont quite clear about how to post the attachment wich page i should go to. could you kindly tell me please, thank u !
ok
i just thought of a better (i think) idea for an intro image to my new site.
here's the CONCEPT - (maximize the new window)
http://zivcg.com/temp/
the images are supposed to go to the edges and i didnt tweak that in yet, but what do u think ?
also, do u think instead of the face i should just put some glowing reds for eyes like in here ? (IGNORE THE HANDS HERE, ITS AN OLDER CONCEPT TEST)

i say ditch the hair on the forearms.
i like the first idea for your site better, but the ring finger looks a little too foreshortened and i'd get rid of the glowy fire stuff around the hand too.
if you go with the second picture, i'd ditch the red eyes. also, your hands are upside down, unless the creature is crossing it's arms to grab the rock. the thumbs should be pointing down towards the ground....

The head in the concept totally breaks the style. I like the first one better too.
wow, thnx Capel, i didnt notice it till u mentuionned it and neither did any of the rest of the ppl i'v shown it to. i dunno if i'll fix it up.
made a minor update to the intro page, i think i'll stay with it but i will stil improve it a bit
