Hi there
Just updated my compositing/3D reel!

A nice reel i must say. Obviously it's kinda hard to see a compositing reel on a small compressed film, you should at least see it on TV (which is still a rather forgiving media) but what are you gonna do about that?

Ok, no for the crits so bear with me, i'm not gonna nice :)

Clip 1: First of all, the boxing sandbag (i guess it is one, but i'm not sure) stands out like a sore thumb in the comp, it screams CG. The transition in the floor could be more concealed and the horizon seems to not be dead right. Last of all I think the bird flys out way to slow, almost in slow motion, but that really doesn't matter this being a comp reel and not a animation one.

Clip 2: Comps always get simpler when you go from colors to B/W. Instead of color correction you really just have to worry about the luminance levels. Well well... The wall in the back is totaly convincing, the big screen could look a little better but it's still very good. The heads are tracked and composited down good, but when it comes to the tracking it ain't the same big of deal getting it good with a frame rate around 8 fps.

Clip 3: A nice comp until the space rock hits the ground. It's just not convincing. The pressure wave could need some more work and the particles going straight up just doesn't cut it, they look so out of place.

Clip 4: Looks good, but it's hard to go wrong when you start out with such a perfect green-screen shot, a perfectly lit screen with no spill what I could see anyway. I think you should have left the colors and not cranked up the contrast so hard to make the clip more challenging.

Clip 5: Nice, I like the interaction between 3D ands video. Just seems like you got some light hitting under the robot where it really shouldn't, but that's kinda minor thing. The comp keeps up with swedish commercial standard. I just don't like the ray from the spaceship, could be pulsating (just with opacity) or something. It should lit up the scene too, I think.

Clip 6: It's quite obvious, even the first time you look at it, that everything behind the sofa's back jumps/floats around. You got a better interaction with the 3 people to the left, but not dead right. But the first thing you should try to fix!

Clip 7: Good comp, but you got a little leak of the bright stripe in front of the board at some points. You could have tried to make the stripe go gradient for a more complicated comp.

Clip 8: Great 70's porn touch in the comp! Nothing negativ, if that was what you were going for. By the way, we had the same same IKEA-sofa at our school (think it was IKEA anyway), a great place to sleep when you been working to 5 in the morning...

Clip 9: Hmm, don't really know what to say, I would take this clip out of the reel, doesn't really give anything special IMO.

Clip 10: Cool idea! Good tracking but not perfect.

Clip 11: Am I missing something in this one? You've alreadey shown to clips before that are desaturated and sharper in the contrast. That ain't much of a trick to show off as a good compositing artist. I would take this clip out of the real too.

Sorry if I was hard, but I guess you are well aware of some of these points.
Keep up the good work!

What softwares are you using for compositing/tracking at your school? Doesn't matter that much actually but would be fun to know.

M25: Great crits! Of course I know about most of the issues!
We use Maya for 3D and previously Shake, now Digital Fusion for comps.

clip07. The snowboard trail was built in a way that I could make the trail gradient or segmented. I'm gonna try to dig up that script again! The trail formed an "A" in the word alpine, but I cut that, in this version a more complex trail would do better.

clip08. from a music video, moved the girl on the right in time, so they would leave the scene in sync.

The b/w clips are from another music vid. considered to make color hi-res versions but, time was the issue. Figured I could show some in the reel anyway but I will follow your advise and remove some of the clips!

clip11. I added a reflection to the windshield, but since it's a static shot, I guess you're right.

Few day back you spoke to about animation schools in India, yes I agree, but my situations here in chennai changes, now I'm learning things myself by looking at sample works provided by the company. Thank you

About clip 8, I see what you meen, missed that completely. But if it's a music sync it kinda gets lost without the music of course.

Is the B/W from the new cult of luna video by the way? Looks kinda similar but I've seen just a quick snapshot of that video.I was kinda dissapointed in their new album, like the two first much more...

And one more thing I forgot to write about the spaceship clip. I think you should cut out some of the stop motion animation. Ain't much of compositing going on there except for the debris masked out on the table.

Well well, gotta finish up my own reel now =)

I liked most of it. The first comp was really good, but the bird takes all my attention off the rest of it. Some of the comps could have been more..."ambitious". anyway, i think everything m25 said would be really helpful.

Thanks you all for the comments!

M25: Yes, the B/W clips are from the Cult Of Luna video. I think they try to get away from the conventional death metal a bit, at least from what I heard. Such things usually dissapoints old fans!
