View Full Version : Inside Wall
Guyon 02-08-2005, 03:08 PM In 3ds Max, you can take a sphere delete a poly and there is nothng inside unless you use 2 sided textures. I just found out you can now make an inside wall.
Is there a function or plugin that can make an inside wall for C4D?

sorry to sound silly, but i've used max for a while and dont know of any 'inside wall' option, do u mean like just fliiper poly's to face inwards?

in c4d backfaces are visible by default. you can turn backface culling on if you wish.
or do you mean you want a different material on the back faces? in which case just choose the option in the texture tag for front/back or both.

I don't think so. I have been trying this also -the Normal Direction seemed to be the way to go, but I couldn't get it working.
What he asks, my interpretation, is whether it is possible to assign another material to the opposite side of a poly, ie the inside of the backside of a cube.
What you can do of course is to duplicate the sphere or whatever, make it a tad smaller and apply the second material to that one.

huh? why would you do that?
just put material a on the object, set it to either both or front or back
put material b on the object, set it to front or back (the opposite side of material a)
theres a section on this in the manual under "Decals". alternatively yes you can use the normals direction shader too. that would work very simply as a mask in a layers or fusion channel. that's if you just want the same material but slightly different attributes on each side.

Well I never...I tried this, but as it does not show up in the/my viewport, I searched further.

No, I am not talking about just flipping normals
@gavinb (http://www.cgtalk.com/member.php?u=94385), there is actully a roll out that will make a real inside face.
@mdme_sadie, well if you wanted to texture the inside of an object but change some of the poinrs around. That is why. :) It is it really quite useful. In C4D can you add differnt textures to the inside face of an object?

yes, that is what we've been describing how to do. are you using c4d? if you have teh demo download the manual and you can look it up with a search for decals.

mdme_sadie, I think you are not reading everything:
"@mdme_sadie, well if you wanted to texture the inside of an object but change some of the poinrs around. "
In C4D, if I move a point around on the outside it changes the point on the inside. What you can do in 3ds Max is have both an insdie and outside wall. Which is VERY useful!
Back to my original question:
Is there a function or plugin that can make an inside wall for a C4D object?

Not per se, but it's easy to do. Just duplicate the object, select all polygons, and use "Scale normal" to make it slightly smaller. Then select both objects and run Function>Connect. There's your shell tool.

if you want seperate inside/outside walls completely then duplicate the geometry, select all the faces, invert their normals, and set backface culling to be on. now edit both meshes togehter, or morge them before carrying on editing.

If, as I have understood it, you want the newly punctured sphere to actually have a thickness - then select all the polys and extrude them inwards for however far you want the thickness of the wall to be.
Then make a 'Set Selection' tag for those inner polys before deselecting them, drop your 2nd interior material onto the sphere, but restrict it only to the tag.
If I have understood your question wrongly then, sorry - don't understand your banter!
Cheers,
D.
The cloth nurbs object can give any object an inner wall, or thickness, and it's parametric. I guess a lot of users don't know about this. You need to own the mocca module though.
