A quintup pentium 6000, with 196gig of ram is the best system for max.

Thats just my opinion though, if you want to have a look at discreets approved hardware, go to:

http://www.discreet.com/support/max/

& lick on 'tested hardware on the left.

As a general rule of thumb, your videocard is going to affect the interactive speed (when modelling, animating etc) & your processor speed is going to affect your rendering time. The only time RAM becomes an issue is when you run out. Then things slow to a crawl, so get at least 1gig if you can.

Uh-huh. That should be
http://support.discreet.com, sign up under your real name, go to OS and hardware and ask intelligent questions. And read everything on the subject by Greg Hess first. Start from here (http://www.3dluvr.com/content/article/7)

If you go by what discreet says you'll end up buying a quintup pentium 6000 for sure.

are you hassling my quintup pentium 6000? :)

@snot_nose - dvorniks right though, Greg Hess does seem to know all - he's got some nice Max benchmarks on 3Dluvr too from memory, check those out. [edit] whoops, dvornik's go that one covered too, I'll just quietly slope off to this corner over here....

does anybody want to buy a used quintup pentium 6000?
:D

Greg is a mistery to me. My favorite FAQ is this:

-Do you have a life? You seem to be always talking on the IRC or the Discreet Forum.
-No I do not have a life. Thanks for asking.

I can relate to that.

he he, I like the temperature readings:

@$!!% -10-0C
WTF!!!! 0-10C
Holy mother 20-30C
Fantastic 30-40C
Good 40-45C
Ok 45-50C
Getting warm 50-55C*
Instability is my friend 55-60C*
I run windows 95 60-65C**
Fire is fun 65-70C**

*=instability can start to occur in extended rendering.
**=instability will occur.
