View Full Version : Changing default position/size of Output window?
Undseth 02-07-2005, 08:35 PM I would like to ask if one can change the position and size of the output window, and set the new values for default behaviour for startup. Would be nice to have the output window popping up at a certain position at a certain size.

Hello. Yes, you can edit the windowPrefs.mel file to set this. It's in your maya/6.0/prefs/ directory (depending on your OS and version this can vary). There is a line in that file that looks like this:
windowPref -topLeftCorner 13 23 -widthHeight 680 540 renderViewWindow;
Just try out settings you like and then source the file. Now the window should open where you like it and at the size you want.
The thing is, this file will get overwritten when you save your prefs inside Maya, or when you quit Maya. So, if you move the window or resize it, that new position will be what you get next time you launch.
Another idea is to check out Brian Ewert's script for docking your own scripted panels: http://www.ewertb.com/maya/mel/mel.php?howto=53
You could use this to make a button that launches your render view where you want it every time; look for the additional flags on the window command in the mel command reference.

Hmm this wasn't what I had in mind. Should have known right after you posted.
I usually use the spacebar switching to renderview, or these last two days I have tried out a script rendring "out in the viewport". I never knew the renderview was sticky, but now I know.
I was thinking of that window where any progress messages, error messages etc. are shown
But coming to think about it, the "Output window" never pops up each time you render as long as it is minimized. But I have to reposition it every time I start maya.
I could not find any line in the prefsfile regarding the output window. It has perhaps an other name.

Oops! My mistake, I should have read your post more closely. I honestly have never tried to wrestle with that Output window.
