You are not limited to outputing low polygon models either. Here is the raptor again, this time with 50 000 polygons.

And here's a cow, no texture, 20 000 polygons. It was created from a small toy out of one of those "farmyard animals" collections. So if you needed a farm setup fast you could have a whole zoo in no time.

... but those models look terrible...
no way on earth that stuff would be useable without a lot of hard work to clean them up...

It depends on what you are using them for. If you just need a bunch of background objects then you could use them unmodified. Or if you need mock up stand-ins for an early demo.

But for the professional modeller the program is primarily designed to produce fast prototypes, to cut down the time taken in the first stages of modelling. The textures and meshes would no doubt be adapted and adjusted, and the texture modified, to suit the need of the animator. Its handy to have something to start with rather than build everything from scratch, and you can't always get a pre-existing model to work from.

You might not even use the original mesh in the final product at all, instead using them as accurate reference models or the basis of further topology maps.

I think the technology is very interesting, though the usefullness of it may be limited. I agree that it would be good for blocking out detail.
