View Full Version : Splines and Vertex Maps

Maybe I totally missed this. I had always assumed that vertex maps worked with splines. Now it seems it does not work ( quite possible I am doing it wrong ). Vertex Maps are based on vertices and no the polygons, hmm... Can anyone else make vertex maps work with splines ( and deformers through restriction tags? ). Can't seem to find it in the manual.

Feeling ignorant. ( yes I know, feel free to make cracks at will )

Thanks!

Okay, here goes: did you check the post directly below yours?!

indeed restriction tags don't work with vmaps on splines. dunno why, it's a bit of a silly limitation. if i have to weight splines i usually add my own tag.

LOL, I did a search honest. Brain a little overwhelmed. So many SDKs, so many irons, cranium meltdown...

( sorry, a limitation, I get it )

Well, in these situations adding tags is problematic because then it doesn't work with native deformers. I would like to hear the reason this doesn't work as they are only vertices. I am sure that it isn't actually a bug, just inappropriate use on my part... :argh:

sorry to say it darf but its bad design on maxon's part. Same thing goes for the verticies in the FFD object

dunno about native...maybe in ditools use c4d spline shader...then use ditools texture to VM expression...whether thats what you're looking for or not though...might be worth trying.
does seem one of those things you'd just expect to see really...then when you sit back and think about it its a bit more tricky.

In testing J3 tools I wanted to test using VM data on a spline iteration evaluation. Seemed simple enough. They are vertices, vertices can be painted and evaluated. Oops, not on splines? They are also considered point objects. Hmm. Reboot brain. :argh:

really looking forward to J3 bud...much fun stuff on the horizon...
j2 is one of those tools i use very very often..it creeps into your workflow and any improvements on it are a major plus for me bud. so keep trying to break stuff bud..its what makes its interesting when it all goes good with your software...we then as users have something equally interesting to break stuff with...and you know me...i love experimenting with looks etc...so without guys like you i'd be lost to be honest...or at least floundering...heh heh
keep up the good work looking forward to a release.
