View Full Version : Comical Self-Portrait (A Russian U.S. Navy Sailor)

Howdy,

I am not very good at drawing but every now and then I try to draw something. Haven't had much practice since my job keeps me pretty busy (Airtraffic Controller). Well, enough of intruduction for now.. hehe I'm trying to create a comical character based on me. The clothing is not very accurate since he's wearing a utility shirt which can be worn only with ballcap, not dixiecup, but since I want to define that he is in the Navy I put the dixiecup with the utility shirt. I might change clothing later, that won't be the biggest issue. The biggest issue will be the face; I really want to define my character. I'm mostly very seriouse, and if I ever smile my smile is just like on that picture.. pretty depressing, yeah... lol The unibrow... the unibrow... well... what can I say, I got one. Friends tell me to shave it off but I think I'll keep it as my trademark, hehe I was having some troubles with the chin, but I think I came pretty close and kept it comical. Ears are probably too big and too high, not sure.. Got pretty close with the hair though. I used ArtRage to create the sketch, and when the sketch will be fully done I'll redraw it in Photoshop and paint it there. Why do work twice? Well, I like doing sketches in ArtRage, not sure why. Oh and I also use a mouse... yeah... well.. don't have extra cash for a tablet right now.

So, what do you guys think? C&C would be really appriciated. Any tips? Any tutorials that would help with this drawing?

i love this style! the only thing i would change is how the head is attached to the body. i would move it forward more (relative to the sailor) or to the right on the paper.

Actually I'd suggest widening your neck also, so that it extends upward from the back corner of your shirt collar and you can't see that part of your undershirt. Keep in mind that the back of your neck has to be in line with the back of your head since they're connected. :) Although it's a cartoon I'd still lower your ears so the upper tip is at the same level as your eyes. It would be cool if you could post a pic of yourself so we can see how close the resemblance is.

BTW, where are you stationed? I have a friend who, at last writing, was on the Enterprise.

Ilikesoup: I'll post a pic of myself as soon as I'll buy digital camera. I'm planning on buying a Sony digital camera in a couple of days/weeks. I'm stationed at Pensacola Naval Air Technical Training Command. I'm still in training for an Airtraffic Controller.

Yeah, that looks better.

My wife's uncle used to be stationed at Pensacola and we think he still teaches classes there part time. His name is Bill Belanger. Wonder if you've ever crossed paths with him.

Not sure if I've seen him. What rate does he teach here? I'm studying at the ATC school house.

Here's a small update - a colored version of the character. I am not good at coloring and always has been messing up the image by trying to color it (same in 3d.... always was living stuff untextured or uncolored). I don't know any specific techniques for coloring so I tried my best. I know that lines are very bad drawn, but since it's just a roughdraft I'll redo it.

Looking for a tut that explains how to color/shade images, and how to create nice outlines.... haven't found a good one yet.
