i started a new model and soon discovered that i cant rotate polygons the easy way (moving cursor over wanted axis), still i can rotate polygons via rotate transform type-in. Is there a explanation for this (incompetent user) or am i dealing with unsolved mysteries of software bugs.

Can you still Move and Scale OK with the gizmo?

yep, everything else is normal, only rotate is misbehaving and not only with polygons but with objects too.

Check your Preferences--> Viewports and make sure your Rotation Increment isn't set to something stupidly small (I believe the default is 0.5 degs), and make sure you haven't got Angle Snap enabled.

Other than that the only thing I can think of which would cause dodgy rotations is if you have applied an animation controller to an object at some point and hit the "make default" button by mistake.

If all else fails back up your UI files and delete your 3dsmax.ini file. Max will write a new one when you next start up and all your options will be returned to default settings.

Best of luck.

Thanks a lot Iain,
the rotation increment was something like .0001, changed it to .5 and rotate works again.
