Hi everyone, I have Maya 5.0 and I've been following the tutorials and references supplied with the program, but I haven't really gotten off the ground with the program yet.

I better know how to use 3DS Max and that might be a problem, for example I find the whole node-system to be quite confusing and over my head, I don't know maybe I'm just an idiot though :) .

Anyways, I was recently thinking of purchasing Introduction to MAYA: Interface and Workflow from The Gnomon Workshop. Anyone know if it'll teach me enough to get off the ground with this confusing program? (it isn't that confusing per say, because my 3ds max experience kind of helps, but still...) Its only $25.00 too, which is good, but the basic reason why I'm making this thread, is because The Gnomon Workshop has like 30+ dvds for Maya ... would I have to buy all of these (or the majority of them) to get good enough working knowledge of this program? --seems like alot.

Well, any help is appreciated, thanks in advance.

(oh and btw, I recently downloaded the Zbrush demo/trial version, and it really looks like a sweet program, kind of confusing once again [obviously I'm not very good at learning new apps], anyone got any good things to say about their Zbrush DVDs?)

3dsmaxnoob,
i've seen a few gnoman vids and have found them to be very helpful, however i've not seen the one you're talking about. before you spend any money you should search around for some intro tutorials.
there are some good ones at digital-tutors.com. also 3dbuzz is a good resource [they require a free registration to view vids, which are pretty good] also on that site is a tutoral search that is full of user made\professional tutorials. i'd bet you could find lots of interesting stuff there.
good luck, if you're like me you'll need it.

I purchased the Gnomon Beginners pack when I bought my copy of Maya. It's a good pack, although expensive. Personally I think you can learn a lot for free from places like learning-maya.com. Then there's www.simplymaya.com which is also a good resource, although most tutes are not free, they are fairly cheap. Essentially you buy points and use those points to DL tutes. They have some good stuff there.

Basic tutes are also available from www.digital-tutors.com who also have DVDs, but a lot of beginner tutes are free to download.

Have fun.
