View Full Version : Twisted Extreme Sports - Character - catbells007
catbells007 09-12-2002, 01:31 AM Hey all!
My first entry into the challenges. Need to get some extra work into my portfolio so thought entering might give me a much needed kick up the ass.
Blurb: My characters origins lie in mid 17th century London where a plague of a certain kind of rodent have infested the town. However the locals who are a innovative bunch have turned the plague to their advantage. They alleviate their boredom by putting the vermin to use (dont think the animal rights would approve) as part of their equipment, thus allowing them to take part in a sport with a somewhat contempory slant.
Yeah okay its a bit mad but i came up with this after one of those all night working sessions (it was about 6:00am i think). Dont think it will be too hard to work out what the sport is.

fantastic, mate. If your 3d work is anything like as good as your 2d work, then we're in for a treat

HAHAHAHAHA!! Very funny idea
It would be cool if he had some kind of little whip or something like that to keep those rats running!

First update then:
Very early stages lots of refinment still needed. Have tended to get bogged down in small details on other modelling jobs in the past so with this one ive just "roughly" blocked all the necessary bits in extremely quickly, kinda like an artist immediately painting over his white canvas.
Only parts that have received any real attention thus far are the head and the hands.

I like that idea i was trying to think of something else to put in there. Maybe could have a "Rat'O'Nine Tails" :D
If anyone has any advice/tips for modelling cloth (y'know the drapes & creases), or anything which might improve the character id love to hear it. Please crit away.

LOL, model looks great! and that is te funnist idea yet!!! When I frist read the thread, i thought maybe rat soccer or something, and then I saw the image, OMG, couldn't stop laughing. Keep going, I can't wait to see it finished!
damn thatīs nice.
Excellent concept though I canīt really see where the rats fit in - the skates would be rolling anyway - right ??
So far your character looks very fine - keeping an eye for updates.

Errrr....yeah.....hmmmm. As i said originally i came up with this idea at about 6:00 in the morning. On reflection the rats are slightly uneccessary but they fit in with time period and add to the "twistedness".:D Also they might help to keep him rolling when going up hills.:)

It's cool, :bounce:
Good explanation - accepted.
Sometimes my logical mind is too focused on functionality and minimalism - many an idea has been ditched on that behalf:thumbsdow

Absolutely! The hat will definately receive some more attention. Ive only really worked on the face and hands so far. Unfortunately not had time to do any more for the last couple of days. Hope to get some more done tommorow or the day after.
Thnxs!

A quick update:
Started to add some detail to the creases of the sleeves and also the bottoms of the trousers. Still ton of work to do though! Have actually begun work on the rats but havent posted it because they just look like blobs at the moment.

Made a start on the skates, i am going to rough these up as well so they look more like they are made from wood. Also the rat will be laying on some kind of harness and frame work (not floating as he appears now). Been working the folds n creases some more too.
Dunno if ill get it finished in time but im going to just keep going anyway. Apologies for the renders they are crap but theres no point wasting time lighting it nicely n stuff at this stage.
All comments appreciated! :wavey:

Wow! How'd I miss this one? Really wonderful style you've got. I'm amazed!:D
This is me amazed ->
Good updates as usual.
That rat must be real strong or the boyīs real light. I suggest you squash that rodent some. Maybe thatīs done rigging it ?

espaki & erilaz: Thanks, i dont really do the more serious stuff as well and find it more fun to do "cartoony" work.
rok: I might put a bit of squash into them once rigged but they're pretty strong fellas anyway, i did try to beef him up a bit. Anything goes in a catoon anyway right..... :D
Been spending a bit of time on those creases tonight, think ill move on from those tommorow as they are driving me nuts now.

Very cool! I love the style.
What package are you working in ? I'd die if I had to weight your project in XSI...
Only thing I'd say thus far is I think the shoulders are sitting a little low in my eye... they look like they would look right if his arms were at his sides... I can never get my own shoulders to work right though so I can't talk...
Beautiful stuff!
catbells007

Mr. Cadillac: Im working in Max 4.2 using sub sivisions so ill be weighting the low res which certainly makes life easier. I think id agree with you about the shoulders, ive not given them that much attention so far, ill probably bulk them up a bit. I know what you mean about weighting the shoulders though mine usually implode when they are in an extreme position.
Virtuoso: Dont know if the harness i had in mind would be physically possible but ill certainly try and make it look sturdy enough to sell the image visually. Cartoon physics at play here i think. :D
BTW Virtuoso im totally envious of your location, all ive got here is big grey clouds, cold weather and 3D. :thumbsdow

Its at this point that i have to retire from this months challenge. Im relocating so im not going to have time to finish my extreme skater this month.
I will however finish the character and post in the Gallery/Finished Work forum when its done.
Thanks for all the comments guys.
