View Full Version : character:3d _dragon+2d_backgrounds
biriba 09-12-2002, 01:14 AM Hey guys,
I've just finished the main character and some backgrounds for my short film. This is a story about a dragon being chased by a medieval mob. I'm mixing 3d animation with 2d backgrounds.
You can see the images here;

Awsome character you have created there!
The gallary does kinda miss the "scared to death" - :argh: - expression in there.
I really like the style of the backgrounds too. I wonder how things will look once you put everything together.
I hope to get to see your animations soon :D
Keep it up, and keep us posted!

Very well done. I love the character himself and its expressions on your gallery page. The backdrops look awesome too, they remind me of the high point in cartoon animation in the Tom and Jerry years :) Great backgrounds it looks like it will make a fantastic animation. Just make the story as good as your work so far and you will be laughing.

Do you have any composite shots of how the 2D and 3D will blend? Very nterested in seeing the two together.

Looking great, nice cartoon style...
Usually the backgrounds are 3D and the characters are 2D (when these are combined), So this is a nice approach...
Good luck with the rest...:bounce:

well you got my undivided attention, I will really have to keep on track of this one. Love your mattes, very beautiful composition and colour especially (though a little desaturated on the computer, you should see them on my television, WOW). Character fits in very nicely, they seem part of the same world which can be veryhard especialy when using different mediums like 2D and 3D.
The only crit I can think of at the moment is in your poses. While they have great charater in them the silhouettes are awkward on a few of them. You seem to be classically trained so if you look at the middle two, and the bottom left poses, the silhouettes should me a little stronger so you can read the pose without any detail, much like the runnin or karate kid poses. Love the wings, and the way you treat his bottom lip is fantastic, looks real good in the running pose, and really builds an interesting silhoutte.
Is this film purely self interest or for school, or funded?

It is very refreshing to see this kind of "cartoony" inspired work.
I am starting to really tire of the countless robots, orcs, and women with guns...
Congrats on acheiving such a great style with this character and backgounds. I really really dig your style.
Please show us more.

Thanks a lot guys!
I'm using painter and photoshop for all the textures and backgrounds.
The compositing is pretty straightfoward, nothing special; I'm using the matte as an image plane in Maya (just for reference), then I render them in separated files: one for the characters and another one for the shadows. Then I blend it all together in After Effects.
Right now i'm working on the animation where the mob is running after the dragon.

Aww man, I think the link is busted for the animatic. I sooo wanted to see it. Anyways, it looks great. Want to see some shots.
You really give the character a personality! Love your backgrounds - refreshing.
Thank you for informing us how you painted the backgrounds.
Because you modelled and rendered in Maya, can I ask about your texture maps and lighting?
You give the character a life-like cartoon caricature feel.
What sort of texture maps did you use - are there a diffusion, bump, specular maps in there?
Cheers
Mike

Great animatic! Lovely animation! wow! really great job!
Just I think... like the tree is 2D, when the little viking crash with it, maybe you would need add camera trembling to reforce the crash :) Just a suggestion.. although maybe when you add the sound is enough
Anyway... great project! :applause:

Very nice style, this film will be great, I am also planning on doing some sort of a 2D 3D combo film in the near future, after I finish my flash film project and graduate here.
I think you need to add a little camera shake when wh hits the tree, really subtle just to push it a little further. great shot, very funy and love the animation, random natural great little helmet designs, very clear easy to read. Wonderful stuff so far.

Thanks a lot for the interest :)
I finished the short "Run, Dragon, Run!!!"(4 minutes) a couple of months ago, but I was too busy (and lazy) to work on the sound and music. So I asked a friend to do it for me, and I'm just waiting for him to finish. As soon as it's done, I'll post here (probably at the end of the week).

A beautiful looking and animated short. Was looking forward to seeing this for awhile. I am though very disappointed that it turned into nothing but a fart joke. Oh we'll still a great visual treat.
