the trick is to get the crease right where fat hangs over the actual eye lid. In that case you could try modelling the volume with a low amount overlapping and good volume accuracy. After that you could link the influence of a bump-/displacement map to the object controlling the eyelid movement. What I did a while back was Xform a bunch of vertices with softselection to a null/point object which had it's pivot snapped to the eyeballs pivot. Worked quite well for me.

animating eye can be done in different way..
jmBoekestein: seems to be having it about the eylids movement when eyes close when you turn.. like when your sleeping your eye balls go around, and the skin of the eyelids moves.. that animation can be done by animating, with an fddbox (max) or latice(maya)
animating eyelids.. opening and closing them, would be best to use morph targets.
you just copy the head, and make a closed version of the eye.
so youll have an easy slider to open and close it, you dont have to pull locators.
works way better than bones i think

hi thanks for your replys, but what i really wanted to know was how do you model animatable eyelids? not how do you animate eye lids

look at wire frames :D
in a month or so ill have tutorial of modelling a human had, also including explanation how to do eyelids.
but just do some looking around 3d total has lots of tutorials.
famous one : http://188.8.131.52/ffa/tutorials/max/joanofarc/head1.asp
but those eyes dont really have separate eyelids
so than you get something like this image below, when you use it in a realistic human character
here you have a tutorial that shows a good realistic one
and this is the clearest one.. from doby mode, you see how the eyelids are made
here some example for lashes ive done, and a realistic headmodel in wip, where you can see natural eyelids
hope this helps, good luck

You can rig rotation of your helper object to a slider too.
And I think you do get more control with a morpher, but you have to make lots of them or you'll get a linear interpolation and the eyelid pops away through the eyeball. Good luck.

2 to be exact ;) .. just give it a try.
but ive got it to work with 1 to, just have to be lucky i guess :D

I can tell you from a little experience I had with eyelids, that its much easier to make a model with closed eyelids (at least 75% closed, so that you get some space to work), and then do a morph target for an open eye.
