MikaelPersson 09-11-2002, 09:31 PM This is the start of something very violent.

This is just to block out the general shape. Am not sure if I will continue modelling in this pose.

Looks rather interesting... Is it going to be a machine or an ogre type thing that chases people about?:curious:

That pose does not say "rig me!" Is this character going to be fired out of a cannon or something?

a promising start, for sure. Is it gonna be an monster, or just a well trained human?

yea! violence=fun sport! haha:D I cant wait to see what you have planned for this one.
dmcgrath
09-12-2002, 06:50 AM
No i think the arms are going to be chained to the ground. The contest will be to stand up as fast as you can and see if your arms rip off or if the chains break.:p
I cant see you modeling a humanoid into this pose. It would be much easier to model and then rig and pose. Of course you know that, so I'll shut up now. Good luck.
MikaelPersson
09-12-2002, 08:08 AM
Oh, I thought that everyone rigged in this pose? I just wanted to get the feel for the character with this stance.
Good idea for a sport dmcgrath, I think my character would be strong and dumb enough to perform it.
This will be something organic, not any machine. Hopefully that will be obvious later today.

what lighting did you use for that render? Is it a GI, or a custom setup?

I used a script for maya called GI Joe. (Fake GI lighting)

09-13-2002, 12:51 PM
haha Iguiniz.X., the head is as big a project as the whole body. Thatīs why I havenīt even started on it.
dmcgrath, would you be surprised if I told you that there is none? My drawing skills isnīt level with my modelling skills. So I stick to vertex pulling. His arms is not going to be ripped off, maybe someone else participating will get that treatment.
Interesting idea HellRender, yes I will make a timelapse of me modelling the head. But dont get your hopes to high. I am not that used to be doing these kinds of models. Have a too long career of doing cars.
Thanks drunkenmaster20.
Hi there fellah. Glad to see you back. Yes, itīs to early to give any crits really. To general a shape. But I would really appriciate constructive crits later on.
A few more hints, this is going to be a team sport. Brutal.

More work done on the body. Have mostly been working on his legs and back. Just started on the arms.
Unfortunately lots of wierd stuff turned up when I smoothed it for presentation. Those shoulders will get major tweaking. Not forgetting that ass wich turned [ugly] after the smooth.

HellRender, hihi, yes I think it looks funny too. Iīve played around with both. The last render I used GI1.1. But Iīve switched render to PRMAN. Got to practice my skills handling it this time around.

Yes, those tendons did turn out nice. Will see if I have the patience to add those all over his body. More will come, but I dont know how many. Thank you drewzer and monotypic.
lol P.Delapouite, I dont think I would want to meet your little sister. Glad you like the hand, I will try to keep this level on the rest of my creation.
hmm, haim I am not sure if I understand what you mean? I have posted no photos here. If you are using the renders as a reference, please do. As long as you learn something from them.

great mikael, it's really showing very good modeling skill
the only flaw thing i notice right now is those sinews (right word?), they should be a little softer where they are on the knuckles, especially on the fingers - and the place where sinew and knuckle meet on the thumb also looks a little wrong
YoGoLo
09-21-2002, 04:27 PM
nice work !
one (little) crits to increase the quality of this marvellous hand (yet)
I think thaht the frontier between the fingers and the top of the nails is too "straight" (I don't know the word too mean what I want to say)
If U look your hand you'll see that there is a little skin that cover the begin of the nail
I think that it can be better if U add this little detail :)
1 thing to conclude, my opinion :
MikaelPersson
09-21-2002, 09:22 PM
Been working on the things you guys mentioned. (Where I agreed ;) ).
I like the sharp sinews fist, I think they should be soft on an ordinary human. But this is not any of that kind. And yes, I know about the thumb. But I dont really know what to do about it. I think I am going to leave it as it is now. Took care of your crit yogolo.
If you see anything else that needs fixing, do tell.
I have planned to paint veins on his arms to break up the softness. Will not model them, I think a plain bump will do fine.
http://home.swipnet.se/hvaetaen/challenges/september/wip6.jpg
:wavey:
Hi Mikael
that's a nice looking arm. Maybe you could model the wrinkles on the fingers; or will you add bump map? I think modelling'll look nice. What about a palm view?
:wavey:
MikaelPersson

Hi there m@. No way am I going to model wrinkles. I do have a life away from the computer too ;). Seriously though, they will get there in the form of bump maps.

OK now what can I crit next, let's see.................;)
Not very much, that's for sure. Clean and crisp modeling, check.............details...........check................it's very well done mikael. Those pesky almost invisible little points I nitpicked you about are all gone............bravo.
Just a bit of paint here and there in the end and a perfect hand is complete. But......................One thing, and this is the biggest nitpicking you will ever hear of..............The tendons, which are excellent by the way could be just a bit off from one another, just a bit higher or lower, a little curved and tweaked from one another. Maybe a little lower when merging into the knuckles................But what really is up is that what you do have is spot on marvelous...............
P.S................the arm is looking sweet already, great tricep muscles coming through........... :)
I just gotta see the wireframe of this...
Aearon
09-22-2002, 05:16 AM

09-22-2002, 11:35 AM
Good day folks.
Yes, I know about the palm otacon, I think itīs the fact that it isnīt soft and round where it is supposed to be. I havenīt but that much work into it. I dont think it will be visible that much in the images/(animation?) to come. Glad you like it.
Thanks Mr D.
You make me happy Virtuoso :). You are correct about those tendons, little more variety should be added. Iīll see what I can do about it today. Glad you like those muscles.
Sure -wT-, Iīll post a wireframe later today.
You are absolutely correct HellRender. Thanks for pointing it out. Much appriciated. Soon, very soon. I hope to have done some modelling on that head today. But I presume you want the final thing in one movie? I am only on a modem, so I have to be rather conservative with uploading movies of that.
Thanks fist.

Looking very cool so far, excellent modelling! :)
do you have any concepts or anything we can see??
keep it up!
MikaelPersson
09-22-2002, 06:14 PM
Thanks Jeffo. No concept drawings yet. I havenīt drawn any, but started sketching on a head today. My drawing skills isnīt that good and my ambitions about them exceeds my capabilities big time. So Iīm afraid there wont be any. Maybe there will be a head drawing. But dont get your hopes up to high.
Have finalized the hand today. I am at the stage where Iīve gotten blind to changes. So I will leave it as it is for now. I may go back to it on a later stage to fix a few things.
The major addition is the rotation of the thumb, thanks to HellRender. That added a lot. It looks too soft right now. But I expect that to change when Iīve applied bump for wrinkles.

Hye Mike, everything is comming on nicely. I see your going into details, pretty cool. I have to say tho that you should remove the bony lumps off from the wrist they are pretty much impossible with humain physioligy. And I belive you should bulge more the interior of the hand too.
Just my 2 cents. other then that is all pretty good, :)

well nice indeed!, it is not right but who cares looking neat. Just reminds me to mention that you overdid these bones definition under skin...make it maybe less defined (less bumpy) . These are visible only when fingers are in certain position (sligthly bended upwards) so the hand is not in relaxed position. The knuckles have to lay on imaginary circles when hand is wide spread. Also there is more space between last knucklejoint and the fingernail. And much more things but not too important. maybe this will help more then zilions of words. keep up:thumbsup:

Just a reply to Freemind, and also a general response to this thread...
Firstly, this is wonderful - very nicely modelled, and I for one can't wait to see this fellah in living color.. 3D, whatever. Get his head out of that block! Please!!
Freemind, good points, but I thought I'd just note that this is a creature, not a human; who knows how it's joints are set up? Yes, you're right to point out that just because it's a monster doesn't mean that anatomy should go out of the window. Indeed, it makes the challnege harder - how to model a convincing creature that is inhuman and yet at the same time maintains a realism about it's anatomy? In my opinion, that's a hard act to judge, and this model, I think, has acheived it. Yes, crits are one thing (and I know that this forum has had MORE THAN it's fair share of comments on both sides of this argument), but I think there's a world of difference between a slackly-modelled piece and something that hints at other-worldliness while being recognisably "living".
That said, I don't want to be the sort of killjoy who goes around slapping others down - after all, crits is what this is about, right? Sorry if I offended anyone with this ramble; I guess my point is "cut some slack" - but not TOO much, ok? :)
MikaelPersson
09-24-2002, 01:12 PM
Interesting to read all of the comments.
Iīve read your points freemind, but rebeldreams have already said what was on my mind.
This is not a human, think troll. I really like those bones showing through on his hands. So I will keep them. Anyway I do appreciate the honesty shown, an opinion is interesting to read even though I dont agree completly.
:) yes rebeldreams I hope to bring out the poor fellahs head out of that block soon. But paid work and a collapsing world is hindering me right now. I hope to be able to show something soon.
Your appriciation shown is giving me another burst of energy. Thanks!
at least those wrinkles should look nice without being too long to do (hey I didn't mean you to model every single wrinkle of the hand :) )

Hi there m@. Yes, ofcourse I will do those wrinkles, but they will be bumps. Maybe I could model them. But I think I have to move on, I have a tendency to single in on one thing if I start getting into too much detail. Dont worry, they will be there in one form or another.
No offense taken freemind. Itīs strange with models like these, sometimes they just dont feel right. But you dont know what it is. Just the feeling, the thing can look good, but you got that sense. Glad you like the model.

Finally something to show. Been working on his head this weekend. Have arrived at something that is almost satisfying. This is just WIP, so there will be major changes and improvements. Right now he lacks character, to bland. He is suffering from the smooth look.
I hope I will bring out one evil big guy of that model in the coming days. Dont bother commenting about those wrinkles on his forehead. They were just some test I did before wrapping up for the day. Expect huge improvements on them.
Thoughts and improvement suggestions very welcome!

Hi Mikael................Well I think you are in the right direction with your character's head. It will pretty much match your hands and arm.............As for the improvements you mentioned with a little elbow grease I think it will turn out very nice.
My only thought thus far, is that perhaps you can think of giving the head a little more girth, or width, a Orc/troll always seem to have that extra size. But again it is your troll/Orc, so I leave that desision to you...........It seems like a cross now of a man and ORC, perhaps that is more of what you are going for?
Never the less it already is looking to be one to look out for in overall quality............as usual fine work from you....

09-30-2002, 02:48 PM
Hi there folks. Yes, Iīve been thinking of adding that extra largeness of troll/orcs Virtuoso. But I wanted to stay away from the standard, huge yaw orc. I have been picturing him with a really large skull and somewhat smaller face. But I will change his proportions more towards troll and lessen the man in him.
lol fellah. Yes, you might be correct about his iris, Iīll see what he looks like with smaller ones.
Ah, ears, OZ. I knew I had forgot something ;). Yes, they will turn up. Making them non human will probably add a lot to him.
Hopefully there will be an update late tonight, but I have some real work to take care of too. (Got to bring food to the table.)
I probably should mention that timelapse I promised. Sorry HellRender, but there will be none. I simple couldnīt work with it turned on. It felt like having the client sitting behind me watching all the time. And I canīt work under such conditions. Hope youīll understand.

its hard to get to this cgtalk ...you all know....Well nice head , looks promising. To me he is looking like bulldog and human cross..maybe its desired ? His cheek is maybe too much fatty and his mouth are like human make it more orcish ! I love orcs :) I would also change shape of his nose , more wider at the base and smaller at the top without this bulge (more triangle shape). Also scale his bottom part to make it wider..maybe more dumb feeling (in case orcs are dumb) keep up i like it much!very good work!

10-02-2002, 09:58 PM
Have tried another direction for the troll today. I think this is the way Iīll go.
There are obvious stuff that will need a lot of attention, like the eyebrows and nose not forgetting the mouth. He still have that awful smooth look, hope to be able to change that in the following days.
Please crit to pieces, even though you may think itīs obvious I might look past it.
I would appriciate some advice/hints of what to change to turn him more into a troll than human.
My general idea of him is to try staying away from the standard troll/huge fellah (not you) look, with huge yaw. I will go for a large skull instead, try to keep the yaw more or less the size as it is now.
The ears will turn up, I just thought it a good idea to nail the shape of his head before slapping them on.
Thanks Lorenzo glad you like it. Maybe this is more of your taste freemind77?

crits:
I think all "flap" and "wrinkles" are to sharp. and the flap under his eyes hangs down to much, and add more wrinkles to them to! *feeling like a teacher* :wip:
and I know you wan't this headshape but an idea is to make it a little more round if you're going for a troll.
also, the corners of the mouth is a bit sharp..

Also I like the idea of a little extra size in the skull area while still maintaining the rest of your Troll/Orc's look. Just do your thing Mikael,I already know it "is" and "will" be even another top notch creation when you finish.

Your confidence in me guys, is greatly appriciated. It feels nice when someone belives in your abilities.
Yes, fellah I think I will go for a round head, but will probably keep the oblong shape of his face. I have not started to shape the skull yet. About the mouth, will be fixed.
Right now I have been aiming for a real gaunt look, think of old men that have really skinny faces. That has been my goal.
I will see what I can do about relaxing the skin Digital. Imagine someone whoīve had quite a bulgy face then all the fat has gone away. All that is left is the flapping skin, then the edges will be quite sharp. Maybe I should go the middle way as usual.
Glad you like my ideas Virtuoso, when I decided to make a troll I had to do something different. I am so bored with all these standard looking characters. ( ) Well, maybe I shouldnīt put my own creation on such a high pedestal. But I know where I am aiming atleast.

The small freelance gig is over, back to trolls.
Have been smoothing out ugly features and added some others. Hope to have a bigger update for tomorrow. But please do crit or give some suggestions on this one too.
I havenīt worked on the eyes anymore. They need some serious attention so concentrate on the rest of him. Not forgetting that little wrinkle at the base of his nose. Will remove.
What are your opinions on his lips? Need some direction help there.
Enjoy:

Looking good! I think his lower lip needs to have a smoother transition where it meets the top of the chin....and maybe stick out his chin a little more, not much though. The top lip looks like it needs to be a little bigger and fuller...and the connection of the upper and lower lips needs some attention too. Not much of a crit, but i hope it helped some.:) Keep at it!

Hi Mikael.............Well overall a fine job. As for being a troll, well it just does not have that look compleatly,if you had not told me it was a troll I would never quess that that is what he is intended to be...............But, you have stated that that is what you are going for, A twist on the old stereotyped Trolls, I think instead of calling him a troll you should re-name him......something original, your own new creature "Mikaels Beast"...........for example. The World has enough trolls anyways.................But not enough of Mikaels Beasts I think......;)
The skull should still get scaled up a bit,a little more monster like, the forehead could use a little more size, jut it out a touch........................the jaw should "Jut" out a bit more, also widened a bit...................The bags under his eyes could be toned down just a touch, made a bit smaller........
As for the mouth............without doubt you should give him much fuller lips, more size, the top ones need more added size than the bottom ones, but both need more size............The corners of the mouth where the lips join also need a slight adjustment, they need to join more evenly, more curved,it has too much of a straight line now..............Also the wrinkles around the mouth should be smoother, just a touch again...................
It sounds like alot, but it really is very small adjustments, you are very close to a very clean model, it is already very nice, don't get me wrong, I am just giving my 2 cents,I want to see it get to where I know you are aiming for...............
All nit-picking actually, but I know you are looking for perfection Mikael, so I pointed out the small things that I think could help you...........just an opinion..................But in the end when this creation is done it will be wonderful...............

Finally he is starting to look like something.
I havenīt tweaked the corner of his mouth yet. Will do that when I model the inside of the lips and mouth cavity.
Do you still think his lips need to be fuller? The wrinkles on his forehead need to be more irregular, but I just slapped them onto my low res model.
Thank you Virtuoso and otacon, your input was most valuable. Yes, maybe I shouldnīt say troll. Just big ugly guy. If you want to baptise him, feel free :).
About the bags under his eyes, well I like them just the way they are. But killing darlings is a popular sport, so maybe.

Very nice Mikael, I am liking the "BEAST,Creature,monster,troll..........." very much" ...........The upper lips should get a little more size, just a touch, the bottom ones are looking just fine now. Also I like the nice smooth crease inbetween the lips now, you know the corners of the lips, you did a fine job of cleaning that up ,real smooth.
The wrinkles look good,but..............I think maybe if you get a chance you could make them a bit more irregular, just a bit off center from one another,a little deeper or shallower for example, faded out here and there.
The ears look fantastic, great job. The bags under the eyes I think could be toned down just a bit,but that's just a preference thing.
Your creation now looks to have more life,he seems to have compassion.I like the update very much.Just some more finalizing and you will have your self yet another great creation Mikael..............very nice job.

wow! looking very sweet mikael!! i've missed the last few posts, but you have some very nice modelling going on here!
my only real crit would be the upper lip, right know it looks too... extruded?? it looks like its just popping out of the head (from the front view) the side looks good, maybe make it so its a little more uneven?
just my opinion tho!!
keep up the good work

Thanks for this input, very appricaited. I agree on some parts and disagree on others :). Yes Virtuoso will make those wrinkles more irregular. But I will keep the bags. You are correct Jeffo will make some changes to the upper lip.
Thanks for the in dpeth critique fellah. I agree about the corner of they eye. And the cheek wrinkles. But the rest :), well those are design choices Iīve made. The ear will probably get some more attention. I noticed the örsnibb when I rendered it yesterday. That thing in the middel of his ear will be moved outwards slightly, I agree there. Underbett, maybe itīs to small ;). Whatīs the name in english? But I really appricate you taking the time, even though I dont clompletly agree on all suggestions. :)

more pronounced, longer ears would be my design choice if i had that character.
i agree with fella's streamlined forehead; unless he's an old wise troll chief
an update would be nice.

:) Hi. Well, Iīll try the pronounced underbite (sorry if I offende someone with that word, but thatīs what the lexicon suggested).
Hmm, will see how the streamlined forehead will look too. Longer ears levin? In wich direction did you have in mind? Upwards I assume?
Universeum is still haunting me, so no updates for tonight sorry. If I can shove my brother away from the computer this weekend, maybe there will be something then.

Hi, sorry guys. Been visiting my parents up in Stockholm. So I havenīt had much time modelling. But I managed to squeeze in some Maya time.
Will be back home again tomorrow evening. Then Iīll just have to strap myself infront of the computer and not leave home until the 19th.
To do:
Feet.
Shoulders with more definition.
Bat/Club.
Dwarf? Or some equivalent.
Rig and Pose.
More definition on the belly. Add more loose flesh hanging down.
Will be interesting to see how many of those points that I can tick of in the end.
Thanks for keeping an eye out for me fellah and OZ.

Its nice to see everything coming together! I think the wrinkles around his neck need some tuning up, they look like they come out a little too far. And i was wondering if he was going to be wearing clothes?...Other than that i really like this creation.:)
MikaelPersson
10-16-2002, 10:24 PM
About that neck civil13, that is a neutral position. Lots of sinews. I am not completly happy with it. But I dont think I will lessen the load of muscles/tendons at his neck. And that face will ofcourse get a proper expression for the final picture (if I will make it :)).
 PotatoHead, what can I say. Thanks man.
About clothes otacon. I think I will go for the standard loin cloth. Will see how much time allows for. But it would be nice if I could stay away from the stereotype clothes. will see. And yes, I will try to tweak those sinews some more. Probably not lower them as you would like.
Thanks Virtuoso. The hands did look a bit small in that picture so Iīve scaled them in this one. Glad you like the head size (almost atleast). I will probably stick to this size.
Things still left to tweak:
That large sinew/bone/muscle at his shoulder. It does not look good.
Some sharp edges on one or two muscles.
Feet.
I have just blocked out the general shape of his feet here. So dont waste time scrutinizing them.

It's looking really, really good. the hands and face blended in exceptionally well into the whole body. Just one thing that seems a bit weird though is his neck area. Usually, someone with his head that low would have a counter balance with a big upper spine that protrudes from his upper back and above his shoulders (kind of like a vulture [bird]). Otherwise, it's looking good. I hope you make it, for it would be an honor to see yours amongst the finals.
Keep up the good work
and . . . you had better keep :wip: :wip: :wip:

10-17-2002, 06:17 AM
hez mikael, are you ever gonna put clothes on him?
oh, one crit though, the chest muscles are a bit too small compared to his bi- and triceps. and they sag, muscles usually dont...but besides that, i think your model is excellent, i think im gonna vote for you - provided ill like the changes you make to him.;)
MikaelPersson
10-17-2002, 10:00 AM
Thanks Apt Pupil, really glad to hear that you like it so much. Your thoughts about his neck is very good. :) But time is my enemy, so Iīll see if it will be changed. Probably I will try something towards your idea.
Well, PotatoHead. Maybe the breasts arenīt sagging enough. I like the mix between fat and muscles. It should show that this guy hasnīt worked out, rather lived a really hard life. Clothes? read previous post. There will probably not be much of it.
Maybe you should take a closer look on the other contenders ;). But your words are flattering.

Why do they always have to start crashing when there is 15 minutes left to deadline?
Anyway, here is the compromise of my idea. Had to cut it down drasticly. As you can see there are several anyoing features in this render. But they will disappear some other day.
This was fun, hope I have learnt my lesson until next time.
