I would use a slight noise in the translation of the camera over time. Adjust the wavelength until it is more human like in its form.

hi, i recently had to create some handheld camera animations. i found it pretty easy to just animate a target camera and set up the basic movement. After that, i picked the camera target and animated it slightly to create the impression that the character who is holding the cam tries to keep the focus. Then, i added some noise controllers to the camera and to the target, you have to play around with the strength to get the right look.
If you really want to simulate a character walking and holding the cam, i would prefer to create a dummy character, animate it walking and just link the camera to the hand. It's a lot more work, but you will get a pretty realistic cameramovement.

thewave thanks for responding, but how do you add noise to a camera?

select the camera, open the trackview, select the channel you want to add noise to and assign a noise controller with right click. or just look into the help files ;)
i would suggest adding a list controller first and then add the noise controller, so you have more control over it.

Just to add to this,
I know some people have actually used a video camera, shot footage of a move they had in mind, then used a camera tracking feature to recreate the camera move virtually.
While this may be more work, the results often look pretty awesome, because the motion is really natural looking. If someone has any experience with this process, I'd love to know more.
I believe that you need to take some key measurements in the area that you are shooting, then recreate with camera trackers.
Anyone, have experience with this?

It may be a little excessive but when I want this effect I tend to create a CS biped for the camera man and position a camera as if he's holding it, then animate the camera man moving to follow the action. To some that may seem like alot of work when you could just do the camera noise method, but in my experience camera noise doesn't really give you the same effect when it comes to to turns, running at angles, vaulting over stuff, and that kind of thing. Imo the effect you get off animating an actual camera man character is far better.
